How to Change Indentation of Numbered Heading?

Hi there! I'm having a lot of trouble changing the indentation level on a numbered heading in Word. Whenever I drag it in the ruler, it snaps back right away, and if I try to change it in Paragraph (either just selecting the text or Modifying the heading format) it makes no difference. To make things even more confusing, some of the Headings can be changed, but some can't. Any help would be greatly appreciated--thanks in advance!

The indentation and other formatting of numbered headings is determined by the Multilevel Numbering setup. To make this work reliably, you must use the procedure in https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html. (This is still applicable to all later versions, including Office 365.)

Click in the first level 1 heading in your document and then access the Multilevel List dialog box via Home > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List. Make the required changes for indentation in the dialog box as discussed in the article for which Jay provided a link.

That did the trick--an easy fix for an issue that I'd literally struggled with for years. Thank you!
