Can't play .mov files in Windows Media Player 12

Question

I just upgraded to Windows 7 and now I can't get the Windows Media Player 12 to play .mov files.  It will play some old ones but not the new ones.  I even tried to play with Quicktime and no good.

Firstly I would suggest you to download and install the latest codec on the computer. To do so, please refer to the link below:

Also I would suggest you to check whether media player has set all the files as default. To do so, please follow the steps below:

1.    Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.

2.    Click Set your default programs.

3.    In the Programs list, click Windows Media Player, and then click Choose defaults for this program.

4.    Click on select all check box on top left corner or you can select the check boxes next to the file types that you want Windows Media Player to play by default.

If you don't want Windows Media Player to play a particular file type by default, go back to Set your default programs and choose a different program to be the default player for that file type.

My issue when I try to play a MOV is I can hear the audio, but no video. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem.  Must have been something I did.  They played yesterday.  Same with flv videos - I now get the video with no audio.  Since I am on Win 7 Pro I don't want to load some old drivers on top of what must be lurking within my new computer.

Mir,

I have just followed your solution below but am still having problems.  Can play the .mov file but no sound.  Program is blocked due to compatibility issues.  Version is incompatible with or has been superseded by this version of Windows.  When searching for solutions online 'Windows Media Technology is blocked due to compatibility issues'. Any suggestions?

Same problem here, and your suggestion did not work for me.  Below, please see my WMP Tech Supp't info. 

Readers with the same issue can open Media Player, click Help > About, and then click theTechnical Support Information link to produce the same information for your particular build/install.  Aside from the default WMP install from Win 7, Genuine Advantage users can install Windows Live components after authenticating/activating your OS.  You may have installed this already if your system runs Automatic Updates, though you would have clicked a few OKs to run the Windows Live installer.

Anyway, I followed your suggestion above and ran into a few snags.  First, the link you provided is not appropriate for Windows 7, as requested by the OP (and now, by me also :) ).  On the download page, please note:

System Requirements

• Supported Operating Systems: Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional Edition

Next, an attempt to workaround this requirement using automatic prompts - or the manual effort to install using one of the compatibility modes appropriate for the listed requirements - produces the Program Compatibility Assistant message:

Check online to see if solutions are available from the Microsoft website. If solutions are found,

Windows will automatically display a website that lists steps you can take.

Now, the best instruction so far is "view the information at the Microsoft we****b site", and here we are.  At this point, everyone is caught in a recursive loop - however well-intended. :( 

So, we all still hope you will post a satisfactory solution - or guidance toward one - in the very near future.
