Windows Update checkbox does not show up anymore

I unchecked the checkbox in Windows Update settings 'Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows'. After doing that, the checkbox disappeared from the settings window and I cannot reverse my decision. This effectively disabled updates for MS Office products. Is there an effective way to reinstate this checkbox that has disappeared from Windows Update settings window?

Hello!

Thank you for your response. I have already tried to solve the issue the way you suggested. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me either. To be more specific, in step 3 the page opened in Internet browser does not give an option to install or in my case, reinstall Windows Update agent. It simply says to ‘Use your Start menu to check for updates’. I assume there is nothing wrong with my Windows Update agent.

Finally, I found a solution. If someone encounters similar problem you might want to try follow the steps described in the end of this page http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/38008-missing-option-windows-update.html . This is exactly how I expected this issue to be solved.

Thank you again to everyone for your input!

    Hello,

I understand that you are asking about why the option Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows is unavailable in your Windows update settings. I'll explain why this happens.

After you clear the check box for the above option, this option is completely removed from the Update settings as you opt to no longer receive the Microsoft Update.

To reinstate this, you need to follow these simple steps.

    1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
    2. In the Windows Update dialog box, click Find out more near Get updates for other Microsoft products.
    3. It will open up a page in the Internet browser to click on I agree to the Terms of Use of Microsoft Updatesand then click on Install.
    4. Having done this, go to the Windows Update page as in the first step and then in the left pane, click Change settings.
    5. You'll now be able to see the option Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows in the settings.

Hope this information is helpful. If the issue still persists, please post back for further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.

This worked for me. Change the registry of Microsoft Office to ask again if you would like to get updates.

1-Close all running Microsoft Office components.2-Open Regedit3-Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\General4-Modify the "ShownOptIn" value from 1 to 05-Launch a Microsoft Office component, it will give you the option to download the updates, make sure you select it.6-Done. If you go back to "Windows Update", then "Change Settings", you will see the "Microsoft Update" and "Software notifications" sections are available again (until the Microsoft Update check box is unchecked again).

This did not solve the problem for one of my client's PC.  Almost gave up.  Nothing will bring it back and the browser never shows the opt in.   But then I added, Microsoft.com to IE 11's compatibility mode and then the opt in check box appeared in the browser!!
