Creating a custom UNIX Linux heartbeat monitor

I need to create a custom UNIX/Linux heartbeat monitor. We have a special group of Linux servers that need their own heartbeat monitor that mimics the "UNIX/Linux Heartbeat Monitor" from the UNIX/Linux Core library Mgmt pack.
Is there a reference that can guide me through the process of creating a custom heartbeat monitor for UNIX/Linux servers?
