Hi Team,

We are planning to upgrade the OS on SharePoint server, however MS team not recommending the in-place OS upgrade, that's why we are trying to add the new application SharePoint 2016 server to the farm.

New server details : Windows server 2019 standard updated patches.
OLD servers details: Windows server 2012 R2 with updated patches.

New server setup is successfully configured:

Enable roles and features
.net frames
SP prerequire sites
SP 2016 installation
Patches (SP1, SP2, May 2021 PU KB5001917)
When run the SharePoint Configuration wizard it is getting failed to connect the Database.

Troubleshooting

Service account has SYS admin permission in SQL instance,
TCP port is enabled,
UDL connectivity is successed,
Pinging the both servers, telnet, tracert.
Instance name is correct,

Farm Details:

OLD SP 2016 App Server1 : OS windows 2012r2 VMware SP 2016 patch KB5001917

OLD SP 2016 WFE Server2 : OS windows 2012r2 Hyper-V SP 2016 patch KB5001917

New SP 2016 APP Server 3: OS windows 2019 Hyper-V SP 2016 patch KB5001917

OLD DB 2016 RTM: OS windows 2019 Hyper-V

Please perform the following troubleshooting:

1.Make sure the SQL Server and SQL Server Browser services are running at all times on the server hosting your SQL instance.

2.Check and disable Windows Firewall on the SQL Server

Here are a few good blogs that might help you:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.

Thank you so much for your quick response.

We have gone through this articles but no progress in issue.

We have done below steps for troubleshooting.

On SharePoint new server we have added features Web server (IIS server 38 of 43)

Install.net framework 3.5 and 4.7 all are installed.

Prerequisites are installed successfully

SharePoint setup installed

run the sharepoint product configuration wizard

getting error

SQL services are running -- i am able to connect same SQL instance through DB serve and New Sharepoint server via SSMS

remote secessions is enabled

Port is enabled 1433

firewall rule enabled in inbound

Windows firewall is disabled

Servers are pinging, telnet, tracert from vice-versa from both DB and Sharepoint

Old sp server is working fine and DB server is working fine, applications and sites are working fine, issue is new SharePoint server configuration wizard is not connecting to DB instance -- i am providing the instance and click on retrieve database it is taking sharepoint_config DB automatically but when i am clicking on next button it is showing error.

Please suggest on the issue

Thank you so much you support on challenge.

I found a malicious thing in SharePoint 2016 farm

i.e; instance name of the SQL server 2016 SP3 is sqlprodserver1\sharepointsites
But in SharePoint farm early admin is configured with sharepointsites as a instance name

when i am tring to connect the existing instance with sqlprodserver1\sharepointsites i am able to connect.
when i try to connect the sharepointsites not connecting, but all the applications are working sites are working. via ssms i am unable to the sharepointsites

sharepointsites this is not a listener name in SSMS i don't know, how it was configured in farm
Is there any chance to change the SQL instance name for configuration database (sharepoint_config, sharepoint admin content)in sharepoint 2016 please suggest,

SSMS provides a single comprehensive utility that combines a broad group of graphical tools with many rich script editors to provide access to SQL Server for developers and database administrators of all skill levels.

Is there any chance to change the SQL instance name for configuration database (sharepoint_config, sharepoint admin content)in sharepoint 2016.

According to my research, we cannot change the name of the Configuration database (SharePoint_Config) and the Central Administration content database (SharePoint_AdminContent_<GUID>).

Issue Resolved::

I have configured the Cliconfg.exe in SharePoint Server, In which SharePoint server you are unable to connect to the database even all parameters are working.

Cliconfg.exe run the command as administrator in windows PowerShell.
Select alias and click ADD
choose the TCP/IP
Provide Server alias name, it is instance name or lister name
provide DB Server Hostname
Provide DB instance port number by default 1433
Click OK and again OK
Now restart the server and run the SharePoint configure wizard.
