Why does my MP4 video not play any sound?

Colleagues

Why does my MP4 video not play any sound? I've tried to find a Microsoft driver update, but I can't find one that looks trustworthy. Incidentally, if I copy the MP4 to my iPad, it plays both vision and sound correctly.

Many thanks

Ian

Most likely the media player you are using to play the file lacks the needed codec for the audio.

The easiest way around this is to play the file on a media player that does have the required codec ... like the media player on your iPad. To play it on Windows you might try the popular (and safe) VLC Media Player which includes a large number of audio and video codecs.

Incidentally, a codec is compressor-decompressor. There are very many proprietary and open source codecs available to compress and decompress media files. No media player has all of them.

Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

There could be several reasons why an MP4 video may not play sound. One common reason is that the audio codec used in the video is not supported by the media player on your computer. Another reason could be that the audio settings on your computer are not configured correctly. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Install a media player that supports the audio codec used in the MP4 video file. For instance, VLC player is a free and open-source media player that supports a wide range of codecs.
  2. Check the audio settings on your computer to ensure that they are configured correctly. Ensure that the volume is turned up and that the correct audio output device is selected.
  3. If you are still unable to play audio in your MP4 video, it could be a problem with your sound card driver or audio device. Check the device drivers, and update them if required.

I hope this helps!
