It would be great if we can run some code from VBA when the user clicks a button in a web page. The new control could have an event that returns all the DOM event information to VBA.

Why do you need to use a browser inside an Office application? Could you elaborate the final goal of such applications?
Well, the webbrowser control exists in office applications since maybe always?. The thing is it's based on IE trident engine which is almost obsolete, it has many incompatibilities. Nevertheless many people use it to show maps or connect with other apps and somehow create hibrid applications. You can also use the DOM object to extract information that is not offered in any other way. Or even automate processes.
In VBA you can create a user form with buttons to automate any tasks.
