Laptop Mute key Status/LED is being changed by Teams. How to prevent?

I have been issued an HP ZBook laptop which has a hardware Mute key with status LED. (It is the media/aux function of the F8 key.)

Scenario

  • The status of the LED seems to be 100% accurate when it is illuminated
    • If illuminated, there has never been a case where I was sending audio unintentionally
  • The slashed-mic pictogram in Teams seems to be 100% accurate
    • If displayed, there has never been a case where I was sending audio unintentionally
  • The open-mic pictogram in Teams is accurate when the Mute key LED is off
  • The open-mic pictogram in Teams does not cause me to transmit audio when the Mute key LED is illuminated
    • This is correct behavior, and I am not complaining about this or wanting it to change
  • It is possible to enter a state where clicking the slashed-mic/open-mic pictogram to toggle its state also toggles the state of the Mute key LED
    • This should NEVER happen. But if HP made it possible for software to control this, I expect any software like Teams that utilizes this feature, to provide me a way to disable it. ## Question

How can I prevent Teams from altering the state of the Microphone Mute at the system level? Changes in Teams should only affect Teams.

Conclusion

If I experience a "can you hear me?" moment because Teams is unmuted but my Microphone is muted at the system or hardware level, that is on me. The user needs to be empowered to take responsibility for turning on/off their Microphone and Camera if they would rather not have installed applications "help them" turn on/off their Microphone and Camera. I have a physical cover for my Camera. The Microphone should also be in my control.

Please advise.
