Azure and On Prem Server

Hi Everyone,

I would like to update our GAL in Azure and have it update the On Prem server we have it linked to. I am being told by our IT contractors that it is not an option - that they need to update the On Prem server in order for the GAL to update.

I am trying to make it more efficient for us to update contacts/emails instead of emailing them to have it updated.

Unfortunately, my trust in some of the information is not very high.

My question is - is this true? Are we only able to update the GAL by updating the On Prem server?
Is my only option to make it easier to update contact lists to create a public folder for our employees to use?

Thanks!

    Hi @Shannon Winings

Is there any update about this issue so far?

The workaround you mentioned above: Is my only option to make it easier to update contact lists to create a public folder for our employees to use?

Yes, it's OK to do, if you have migrated all your users to cloud, you could ceate a public folder in cloud and create the contact list to meet your need.

According your description above, you have deployed AD sync between your on-prem and online environment. When an on-premises object is synced to a Microsoft Office 365 organization through Active Directory synchronization, then the object can only be managed from on-prem Exchange, we cannot manage them directly in cloud, since they are owned by on-prem.

And you could also consider changing your environment to a cloud-only environment if you have all your mailboxes in Exchange Online. And you don't need to manage your users from on-premises and no longer have a need for directory synchronization or password synchronization. This will be an easier choice for your management.
