UNKNOWN ERROR when Importing PST to Office 365 - Support asking to get Azure P1 Premium Support

Hello All,

I am the NEW IT Guy at a Non-Profit - who had registered for FREE Office 365 some time back for their domain but never actually migrated.

120 accounts, most IMAP - migrated via IMAP MIGRATION in Exchange - all done - users happy :)

Some accounts are POP based, old ones with 40GB PST Files on Local PCs for OUTLOOK - am stuck with those.

Tried importing PST into Outlook after adding a new Exchange account, Outlook is stuck at UPDATING INBOX Message in status bar and new emails are NOT received - some items seem to be imported, but am unable to check/verify the completeness of the local per user import.

Tried to import via NETWORK UPLOAD METHOD

  • first split files into smaller PST files by adding MAIL RECEIVED filter with year and between filter option.

  • Uploaded Files via AZCOPY

  • Created a mapping CSV file

  • Uploaded CSV Mapping and started the Validation and Analyses

  • It shows CSV Validated - PST files on Azure Storage Blob (checked/confirmed via Azure Storage Explorer)

  • During Analyses it tells me the size to be imported and also that some emails are OLD - I need to IMPORT all, so I select the ALL import option

  • Start the Final Step - IMPORT TO 365

  • The Process FAILS after sometime - 0 items imported, 0 items skipped - no reason for fail

  • Download LOG file, it says ERROR, UNKNOWN

Am trying to get SUPPORT to help me, the support guy got me to register for AZURE PREMIUM P1 Support TRIAL - nothing paid yet - but I dont see why that is needed or how that helps me - also no new additional SUPPORT options in Azure for me the options available there are not related to my issue, I THINK.

REGION: PAKISTAN

THANK YOU for your time.

When you do a manual import using Outlook, the delay is expected since it takes a lot of time to sync (upload) 40GB into the mailbox. During that time, no new emails will arrive either since it is still processing the upload.

You can see the current sync status in the following way; What is Outlook synchronizing now?

As for the network upload method;
Is this to the same mailbox or a different one? Don't use the network upload and an Outlook import at the same time, especially with the same data or you'll end up with duplicates.
It is recommended to upload to the user's Online Archive instead of the user's active mailbox.
The error suggests an authentication error which is detailed further down in the log and not part of your screenshot.

That said, I don't see how an Azure Premium P1 license is relevant in this case either.

THANKS for your reply

Due to large file and slow network, it seems stuck - I did check from task manager and it seems to be transferring files.

It just mentions the folder, no percentage or number of items shown to use.

As for doing both at same time, I am not doing that and the network upload SHOULD ignore the duplicates.

Uploading to Archive, I will look into this, do I need additional license for this ? I am on free Non-Profit Plan.

Hi @ZaidPirwani-2084 ,

Welcome to our forum.

Does this issue occur with all POP users?

Agree with RobertSparnaaij, considering the size of the .pst file is large, the import process may take a long time. Please wait patiently.

For this, it's also suggested that you could export the emails to several slightly smaller .pst files, which facilitates import.

And I noticed that, for the "AZURE PREMIUM P1 Support TRIAL" you mentioned, please kindly understand that the Outlook tag here we mainly focus on general issues about Outlook desktop client and know little about that. If you need more help about "AZURE PREMIUM P1 Support TRIAL", please contact the support of it for more professional suggestions.

In addition, considering that the screenshot you provided contains personal information, I have hidden it in order to avoid privacy disclosure. Please remember to hide your personal information before uploading.

THANKS for replying and hiding the private email info and other data

I myself was a bit concerned when I saw it after upload but left it. would be more careful in future.

We will try to start the import process over the weekend when users are NOT in office.

I am trying to split PST files from Outlook, using the filter option with BETWEEN rule and mentioning dates - is there a better way ?

I am still waiting for more info from SUPPORT - it seems I am stuck nd as for Azure Premium P1, I don't see any new option in my admin panels. The support options in Azure Admin dont seem relevant to my problem.

Hi @ZaidPirwani-2084 ,

Thanks for your reply!

Do you have any updates to your issue?

I am trying to split PST files from Outlook, using the filter option with BETWEEN rule and mentioning dates - is there a better way ?

Do you mean Outlook client rules? As I mentioned above, you can manually export to a smaller one in the original mailbox PST file.
