Hi.

One of my customers just bought 5 RDS User Cal licenses.

The reason why they both licenses as they wish to have more then 2 concurrent RDP session to a server.

They environment IS:
1 physical hosts with Hyper-V role installed - Licensed 2019 OS STD
and 2 virtual machines on that host - (1 DC and 1 PLAYGROUND - both with licensed 2019 OS STD)

They need to have:

  • More then 2 concurrent RDP session on the physical host
  • More then 2 concurrent RDP session on the PLAYGROUND virtual machine

Which roles should be installed?

  • I came to the part where I have added role: Remote Desktop Licensing on a physical host.

Now I'm confused what are roles needs to be installed on that host to achieve more then 2 RDP connections to this host and also to it's virtual machine.
Please advise.
With best regards

Sounds good, enabling remote management may be a better option or also Windows Admin Center

    Hi DSpatrick.
    Thank you for your reply.
Still didnt implement it on customer side as I dont feel so much confident that it would break their current RDP access.
    I also found this URL:

    https://www.slashadmin.co.uk/how-to-setup-a-single-server-rds-deployment-using-server-2016/

and I'm planning to follow the steps in the URL above.
Still unclear what roles (if there any?) should be put on 2nd server (the VM on host) that also needs more then 2 concurent RDP access.

Will mark this thread as answer probably in next 3-5 days when I will implement it in their production.

    With best regards

Ok, for internal only you can skip the RD gateway.

    DsPatrik hi!

1st of all thank you for your reply.
The article/hyperlink you have provided is mentioning a couple of other roles (for example also RD gateway). I'm not sure all those roles are needed for this specific scenario (resources will be accessed only from internal LAN with a VPN connection; no need to publish server externally) where they need only more then 2 rdp active sessions on host and more then 2 rdp active sessions on 1 out of 2 VM's on the host.
Can you be (please) more specific which roles needs to be selected for this particular scenario.
    Thank you.
    With best regards

Its not recommended to install other roles on a hyper-v host. Also note that by doing so takes away one of the two allowed rights for Operating System Environments / Windows Servers containers.

You can follow along here for deployment of RDS role.
