This is a Veeam problem. Not a SQL Server problem.

Hi,
Can anyone help with this error message? We are using Veeam backup.
"Unable to truncate Microsoft SQL Server transaction logs. Details: Failed to call RPC function 'Vss.TruncateSqlLogs': Error code: 0x80004005. Failed to invoke func [TruncateSqlLogs]: Unspecified error. Failed to process 'TruncateSQLLog' command. Failed to truncate SQL server transaction logs for instances: ADVENT. See guest helper log. ."

That's a thrid-party product; have you contacted Veeam support first, may it's a known issue?

I suppose veeam uses an agent on your target SQL Server.
Under which user account is the veeam agent running?
It seems that the executing account does not have the appropriate permissions.Best regards

The account Veeam uses to take backup have the correct permissions since it's in the "administrators" group locally on the server, so permissions shouldn't be the issue here.. but thanks for the reply!

I asked because I remember a similar backup software where the executing account needed sysadmin inside instance as well as admin rights on the windows machine.
RPC port is available ,eg Firewall isn't blocking anything?
also, does it happen for a specific database or for all databases?

2022-05-18T09:39:41.373+00:00 The FW shouldn't be blocking anything between the SQL server and backup server. My guess is that it's happening for only a few databases, but it might be the whole server. The error message doesn't really say anything about that. I will contact Veeam and see what they have to say. Thanks!

william bishop 0 Reputation points2023-07-14T13:26:08.89+00:00 You have two choices, you can either make the backup account you're using for veeam a sysadmin on the sql box, or you add the backup account to sql server, and go to each database and give the user backup operator permission. Confirmed working either way in a large veeam environment with quite a few sql servers.
