Windows Server 2022 Blue Screen INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Hello, I have been using the Windows server 2022 which is installed in my notebook for testing purpose. One day when I tried to boot up the sever but the Windows server could not be started up. BIOS could detct the harddisk in boot manager but I suspect that the MBR may be corrupted or missing. The notebook rebooted in the pre-boot stage endlessly.

I successfully fix the problam in WinPE using bcdboot.exe. But when I restarted the server, it showed a blue screen with the error code of INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. I install this harddisk into another PC, the Windows server can be started up normally. Anyone know how to fix that.

And I also do sfc /scannow and chkdsk.

Please don't recommend me to reinstall the Windows server because I have created a domain and users haved joined the domain. If I reinstall, the user SID will be different so the appdata folder will not be compatable.

Thank you!

INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE mean your disk controller cannot find a boot device either because of hardware problems or more likely because of boot device driver problems (unsupported hardware) A better option may be to install it as a virtual machine.

So the disk connects to a disk controller within the laptop. There's three possibilities for INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
- disk controller failure
- disk failure
- problematic boot device driver

Most likely is the third one because there's no supported Server 2022 controller driver for the laptop hardware. You may have better luck installing Server 2022 as a virtual machine for your testing.

but I can boot normally in safe mode, no blue screen, so I think is not the hard disk problom.

Sounds good then, I also did not think the disk was a problem.

If in safemode it work, it's most probably a bad controller driver. I would suggest to boot in safemode and go in device manager, delete the controller and reinstall it if you can.

You need to find it, and click re-install driver. What server brand it's ? HP often it's P420xx or in Dell it's tagged PERCxxxx

Missing or damaged/corrupted Windows System files. You have to scan and repair damaged windows system files. Sometimes it indicates a BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG usually means that there are problems with the system registry and need repair it.

I don't think is the registry problem, I tried to copy the files that is the RegBack folder to the config folder and overwrite exist file, still no luck! :(

Hi there,

Any one of the following factors might cause the stop error:

-Missing, corrupted, or misbehaving filter drivers that are related to the storage stack
-File system corruption
-Changes to the storage controller mode or settings in the BIOS
-Using a different storage controller than the one that was used when Windows was installed.
-A faulty motherboard or storage controller, or faulty hardware
-Corrupted files in the Boot partition (for example, corruption in the volume that's labeled SYSTEM when you run the diskpart > list vol command)
-If there's a blank GPT entry before the entry of the Boot partition

Here is a link that has some additional troubleshooting steps which you can try and see if helps in overcoming your issue https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/troubleshoot-inaccessible-boot-device
