Hyper-V Checkpoint issue: stored on external drive that dosen't exist anymore

Hyper-V checkpoints were accidentally stored on an external USB hard drive that doesn't exist anymore. I still see a checkpoint in Hyper-V manager but I:

  • Can't delete it in GUI
  • Can't delete the checkpoint subtree
  • Can't make a new checkpoint
  • Can't change checkpoint storage location in settings because "the virtual machine has at least one checkpoint"
  • Can't export the VM
  • Can't use the 'Move" wizzard to change storage location of checkpoints
  • Can't use Powershell "Get-VMSnapshot | Remove-VMSnapshot" commands on it

They all return a generic 'failed' error.

Help! Logged in with Enterprise Admin credentials. Checkpoint was Server 2022 Production Checkpoint.

    Hi,

If all the checkpoints are missing you may try to create a new virtual machine and attach the current virtual disk to that, and then remove the old virtual machine.

    Best Regards,
