Hi All,

I am looking to activate Microsoft’s billing model Monthly Active Users for Azure AD external identities page.

I have navigated to the External identities linked subscription page in Azure.

I have linked the tenants subscription. I selected the live subscription and selected one of the the populated resources groups.

I currently have three resources groups which are populated with resources.

Do I need to link just the one resource group or do I need to link the three individual resource goups.

Also once the tenant is linked to the subscription do I need to unassign the Premium P1 licences which are assigned to the external identities in the tenant?

I have five resource groups. Three of the resource groups are currently populated with resources at the moment.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Hi @david wrafter • Thank you for reaching out. Please find my response inline:

    • Do I need to link just the one resource group or do I need to link the three individual resource groups?
You are required to link only one resource group. This is required for billing purposes only and you can perform cost analysis for external identities by selecting that specific Resource Group (If you exceed 50000 MAUs).
    • Also once the tenant is linked to the subscription do I need to unassign the Premium P1 licenses which are assigned to the external identities in the tenant?
Yes, you should unassign the Premium P1 licenses already assigned to the external identities once the subscription is linked to External Identities. When the subscription is linked, your billing model changes from 1:5 Azure AD to guest license ratio to MAU billing model which means you are no longer required to maintain 1 Premium P1 license per 5 External/Guest users.
    • I have five resource groups. Three of the resource groups are currently populated with resources at the moment.
There are no issues in terms of whether the Resource Group contains any resources or not. Linking External Identities to a subscription and resource group doesn't create any resource under that Resource Group. So, you can select any Resource Group while linking the subscription.
