Try this.
wsl --export mywsl "D:\backup$today"
WSL --export $filename as string variable

I wish I can automate my backups by running automated script every night to back my wsl container, so
I tried to create a ps1 file
$today = Get-Date -Format "ddmmyyHHmm"
wsl --export mywsl "D:\backup"$today
The above generates an error , directory or file is not formated. so how to pass filename to the wsl --export command?

I just got the hint while I am writing a response to you, the file supposed to hold the date stamp
$today=Get-Date -Format "dd/MM/yy"
$today
$filename = "mywsl-" + $today + ".tar"Write-Host "Generating backup $filename, in backup folder D:\WSL\backup please stand by..."
$filename = "D:\WSL\backup\"+$filename
wsl --export mywsl "D:\WSL\backup\$filename"Output :
PS D:\> .\mysql-backup.ps1
01/06/22
Generating backup mywsl-01/06/22.tar, in backup folder D:\WSL\backup please stand by...
T h e f i l e n a m e , d i r e c t o r y n a m e , o r v o l u m e l a b e l s y n t a x i s i n c o r r e c t .changed the -Format "dd-MM-yy" and works like a charm!
actually the name has special escape char / which I couldn't see at midnight work :|

2022-06-01T21:59:03.62+00:00 I didn't know how wsl worked and if that parameter was a folder name or the base part of the file name or what.
You're duplicating the "D:\WSL\backup\" part in this sequence.
$filename = "D:\WSL\backup\"+$filename wsl --export mywsl "D:\WSL\backup\$filename" -

of course the directory wasn't duplicated, has to be taken out in the script, but mistakenly due to type copying I forgot to clean it up,
