Have you tried below steps to solve the issue?
- From Active Directory, add contoso.onmicrosoft.com to the UPN suffix list.
- From the Exchange admin center in Exchange Online, modify the contoso.onmicrosoft.com accepted domain.
- From the Microsoft 365 admin center, add contoso.com as a domain.
If you haven’t, please try it and check if the issue still persists.
