scan to email from outside of organization

is there a way to setup scan to email from outside the organization without needing a certificate. I tried to setup a printer but Cannot connect to the SMTP server.
Try a different port. e.g. 25, 587, 465

I don't think it is able to - so i would like to know what would be needed to be able to scan to email for users to themselves or other staff members.

or is the only way is needing a certificate?
i believe i have the mx address and that is what i was using to test.

    Both method #1 and #3 as detailed here allow you to send to external recipients. Certificate is only needed (recommended) for method #3. If you have tried method #1 and it's not working for you, make sure the device supports TLS 1.2 and the corresponding account has SMTP Auth enabled (all detailed in the article).

    After creating anonymous connector, it is suggested to use Telnet command to verify whether it is created correctly.

    Open relay servers are eagerly sought out and used by spammers, so Microsoft never suggests your messaging servers to be configured for open relay.
