Hi Team,

If any possibility for converting SSD drive of vm to HDD when my VM is shutdown, Please suggest if any approach for this.

Hello @Venkata satyanarayana Machari veera (CIS)

If your Disk is managed, you can take following steps.

Select the VM from the list of Virtual machines.
In the pane for the VM, select Disks from the menu.
Select the disk that you want to convert.
Select Size + performance from the menu.
Change the Account type to HDD from the original disk type to the desired disk type.
Select Save, and close the disk pane.

The disk type conversion is instantaneous. You can start your VM after the conversion.

Hi AndriyBilous,

Thank you for the quick response .Approach which you suggest is fine to continue manual process ,If i want to do the same by using any APIs/Script for all my azure virtual machine please guide me. I am having a confusion how to handle this SSD to HDD conversion for persistent and multi-sessions machines ..if possible kindly elaborate on this.

Here is the Powershell script that could help you:

$diskName = 'yourDiskName'  
# resource group that contains the managed disk  
$rgName = 'yourResourceGroupName'  
# Choose between Standard_LRS, StandardSSD_LRS and Premium_LRS based on your scenario  
$storageType = 'Standard_LRS'  
  
$disk = Get-AzDisk -DiskName $diskName -ResourceGroupName $rgName  
  
# Get parent VM resource  
$vmResource = Get-AzResource -ResourceId $disk.ManagedBy  
  
# Stop and deallocate the VM before changing the storage type  
Stop-AzVM -ResourceGroupName $vmResource.ResourceGroupName -Name $vmResource.Name -Force  
  
$vm = Get-AzVM -ResourceGroupName $vmResource.ResourceGroupName -Name $vmResource.Name   
  
# Update the storage type  
$disk.Sku = [Microsoft.Azure.Management.Compute.Models.DiskSku]::new($storageType)
