    KB5015814 refused to install for me using windows update

    I ran the WIndows Update trouble shooter which showed no problems other than a pending install, but regardless the update did not install.

    I also ran SFC and DISM but they showed no errors.

    While doing the research on KB5015814 issues I read that this update caused problems with . Net 3.5 for some users so I disabled .Net, then downloaded the KB5015814 update directly from the Windows catalogue and hallelujah!! the update installed fine, although it took over an hour. I can't say how long it actually took as I left it running overnight and it had installed the following morning.

    So the steps were as follows:

    • open 'optionalfeatures', you can use windows search for this
    • untick .Net 3.5 Framework (on my PC it was the first option)
    • for good measure i also unticked .Net Framework 4.8
    • click ok and then restart system
    • then go to windows catalogue to download the appropriate KB5015814 update for your system.
    • These updates can be found at 'https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB5015814'
    • download the appropriate version for your system and then run the downloaded .msu file by doubleclicking it
    • Assuming kb5015814 has installed ok, then reboot
    • Hopefully it has installed, but regardless remember to go back to optionalfeatures and re-enable the .Net Framework options you had previously disabled.
    • Click OK and then reboot again for good measure.

    When I went back to windows update it was still showing the error, but upon clicking 'Retry', Windows Update ran and found everything was up to date with no errors.

    I have the same error 0x80073701 with the late June 2022 and then the July 2022 kb5015814 when using the Windows update site.
    I downloaded the file from the Win Catalogue to install the security update manually, but although that looks as if it works by initialising and running, it fails at the end.
    I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter which says there is an update pending and I should reboot, but the update still does not install.
    Help definitely appreciated.

    I had the same error, and tried all the tips I could find on the net, sfc, dism, etc... but nothing helped. Tried manual install from the update catalog, no success either.

    In the end I attempted an in-place upgrade with the Win11 ISO, and even that failed.

    After some more research, I finally managed to solve it:

    • download Win11 ISO
    • run msconfig:
    • on the tab General, select Selective startup, uncheck Load Startup Items
    • on the tab Services, hide all microsoft services and then disable all others
    • restart the system, this is a "clean boot"
    • mount the ISO, run setup.exe and let the install do its job (keep apps & files)
    • when done, re-enable all non-microsoft services in msconfig

    this did it for me, hope this can help others...
