I have been configuring Azure Automation Update Management. I have a bunch of VMs not reporting back and throwing up a 0x8024401C error. Some just simply show as "Not assessed" but don't show any errors. I have around 35 servers in my Automation Account and only 12 of them show errors. They're all in the same subnet, controlled by the same NSG, getting the same GPOs, etc. so I know it's not a networking issue otherwise all of the servers would be showing errors.

What is strange, is that if I go onto some of the affected VMs and run a "Check for updates" they successfully find updates. In fact, most of them have been getting updates consistently. So why are these ones showing errors in Update Management?

I've researched and updated any setting that appears relevant, via various MS pages, checked the NSGs and FW rules, all looks Ok. It doesn't make sense.

    Hi @Lee Calcutt-Scott ,

Yes, as mentioned in this troubleshooting document, in general the exception 0x8024401C is generated if there is a network connectivity issue. So, we may have to double check if our machine has network connectivity to Update Management. For that if you haven't already checked, you may check the network planning section for a list of required ports and addresses.

If this is already checked and still not able to understand the reason for the exception 0x8024401C then this issue might need deeper investigation which Azure technical support team might be able to help with so if you have a support plan, I recommend you open an azure support case as mentioned here.
