Windows 11 keeps freezing sporadically...

Ok, Microsoft, I wanted to stay at Windows 10 Home since I kinda disliked windows 11, then windows 10 home wouldn't boot up, now im at windows 11, and now Windows 11 started sporadically Freezing on me. WHY?
PC Info:
Ryzen 9 CPU, RTX3060 laptop GPU, ASUS ROG STRIX GQ513M model. HELP. ME.

My windows 11 always locks up and today I'm still waiting for my laptop to finish the boot up. WTFLIP is going on? And I'm paying for this 🤔 not that I'm impatient but 3 hours 🤔.

I am also having the freezing. At least 3 times a day. CHKDSK does not help.

I'm not a pro tech person. I'm a home desktop PC user who knows how to do some amount of troubleshooting, and how to do a complete wipe and raw reinstall of my PC. I started having random, chronic freeze ups with no rhyme or reason sometime in early January 2024. The only way to get my PC to work again was to hold the tower's power button down until the machine shut down, and then start it again. I thought the problem was because of issues with the newest January Windows updates that came in, so I tried doing a system restore back to before the freeze ups started. No help. I also ran sfc /scannow and a Windows Defender offline scan, but neither found anything. I've worked with Microsoft & Dell tech support before and, sometimes, they've been a great help. But, oftentimes, they just reinstall Windows or go through a whole bunch of trying this and that which ends up taking hours. So, I did a wipe and raw reinstall myself, but my system was still freezing up. So, I read through some Microsoft & other forums and found that the BIOS firmware and video card graphics drivers were mentioned the most as the culprits. Users said they rolled their BIOS back to the previous version. Others uninstalled their video card drivers and then reinstalled them from their computer manufacturer's support website instead of the video card manufacturer's website. So, I did both. I also uninstalled my Intel motherboard video card software just in case there were any potential conflicts between that and my Nvidia card software. Further, I did an "Express" install of the Nvidia software instead of a "Custom" one, just because. After that, I reinstalled the latest version of my BIOS firmware again. These downloads were all initiated from the Dell support site for my specific desktop PC. That was over a week ago and, so far, the freeze up problem is gone. I guess there was some kind of conflict or corruption that got overwritten by the uninstall/reinstall process, though I don't really know what ultimately caused the freeze ups in the first place. My laptop freezes randomly for 2 to 5 minutes, at least once a day sometimes more. I found events in the event log for SDSSnapshotProcess are logged every time my computer freezes. These are the "The description for Event ID 278 from source SDSSnapshotProcess " type of events so they're pretty much useless. I did find that they almost always occur after a block of MSIInstaller events are logged.

After some research, it looks like these SDSSnapshotProcess events are related to creating system restore points so it seems when Windows creates system restore points for a new install/update, it freezes up my laptop.

For the first few years I had this laptop, it never happened. It suddenly started about 2 years ago, possibly with a windows upgrade, and it continues to this day. It doesn't appear to break anything and no errors are logged. The computer always recovers so I just wait for for the computer to wake up but it's really frustrating.

Brian, thanks so much for your comment above! I’ve had similar sporadic freezes since early January. In the beginning, they happened perhaps every few days, but recently seemed to get much worse and I got thoses freezes many times a day. I started looking into the issue and trying diagnostics, checking logs, switching services off temporarily, all to no avail.

The freezes happened when I was at the computer, just moving the mouse, doing nothing, or when I was not even in the room. Then, in one Zoom meeting I got two freezes upon clicking a button. Except for that, it seemed quite random. Every single freeze meant having to cut power to the PC and rebooting.

How did I fix it now? Following Brian’s comment, I tried removing all Nvidia-related software via “Apps”. Then I went to my vendor support page (I have a Dell XPS 8940 with an RTX 3070), reinstalled the driver from there. (I didn’t try doing it from the Nvidia page, nor did I do anything with the BIOS or any Windows updates.)

And voila: From multiple crashes a day I went to zero crashes, and it’s day 4 today.

Since many people seem to be experiencing those freezes, I am adding this here in the hopes that it will help somebody else, too.

Microsoft likes to say it's a GPU or resolution problem. I have dual 3090 SLI, so that obviously isn't it.

What I haven't seen mentioned is the flawed ILM CPU holder for Intel's latest CPUs.

If you check Event Viewer -> Windows Logs -> System, you're looking for Event ID 37, Kernel-Processor-Power. Because of the flawed cooling interface to the CPU, the motherboard BIOS is disabling CPU performance cores and nerfing performance.

A solution is the Thermal Grizzly aftermarket "CPU Contact Frame", though you have to completely disassemble your computer and take out the motherboard to install it.

Intel should be recalling every single one of these CPUs or giving some kind of rebate.

CPU performance is being nerfed due to the ILM on the CPU manufacturer that begins with an I.

An aftermarket cpu contact frame is available but you have to completely disassemble the computer and remove the motherboard to install it.

I have this same issue, Event logs do not show anything. I have a clean installation, several times. I have a Nvidia GTX 3060. This GUP is a screamer. No issues with resolution. I have 3 Samsung 32 inch monitors and the PC is hard wired to my Samsung 8th generation 65 inch TV. When my PC freezes its a hard freeze I cant use the keyboard. the only option is a hard reboot. I am going to go back to Windows 10 Pro because Windows 11 Pro sucks donkey balls.

Yeah me too, glad I am not the only one, stopcode is DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION currently

do backup and do a fresh installation of Windows 11 - may be issues with drivers compatibility with windows 11

You should look at the Event Viewer application error logs created after such freezing, this will indicate the possible cause of such issue.

You may go for a Clean boot

Update Windows as well as all the drivers.

If the above suggestions don't help then go for a clean install.

Screen freezes on Windows 11 are often triggered by a screen resolution that is higher than what your GPU is capable of processing. Keep in mind that the available display resolutions on Windows 11 work differently than on the previous Windows versions.

Driver verifier is a utility built into the OS that will often find the driver/drivers that are the underlying cause of BSOD/Crashes.

Memtest is easy to use and is an accurate test of your computer memory. It can tell you if your memory is bad, a motherboard slot is bad, etc.

Once you find the faulty drivers you can then update or reinstall the specific driver to rectify this issue.
