CM Client updates failed 800705b4

I have three Windows Server 2012 R2 that are CM clients that for the last few months have failed to download and install updates. When I go to Software Center, there's a list of half a dozen updates that have failed, all with error code 800705B4. Also, there are two applications that haven't installed; they are stuck at status downloading 0%.

The odd thing is that these are CM Dist Points, and I have confirmed that the content has gone out, both from the distribution graph being 100% all green, and the fact that the other servers have installed the updates successfully.

In the logs, I see CAS failed to download update (guid). Error = 0x800705b4. Releasing content request.

What would cause these systems to hang on downloading updates and applications?

Good morning. It was a cert issue; we use HTTPS / certs in our env. (Take the following as-is with no warranty)

TLDR: check IIS for expired certificate on the client

1. Open IIS (inetmgr), go to Default Web Site, edit bindings > HTTPS 2. View the cert; if it is expired, select a different cert 3. Open command prompt: iisreset 4. Restart ccmexec service

Also ensure client can talk to DP over 443 (check firewall, boundaries, etc.)

According to my research, Error 0x800705b4 means “this operation returned because the timeout period expired”. However, to better understand the issue, could you please collect CAS .log, Locationservices.log and Updatedeployment .log?

Hi @Seekell, Roger ,
For further analysis, we want to know if there are error messages from these logs.

For example: (Just for your reference.)

1) Locationservices.log: Records the client activity for locating management points, software update points, and distribution points.

Is the communication between the DP and the client normal? Are there any errors reported?

2) Updatesdeployment.log: Provides information about the deployment on the client, including software update activation, evaluation, and enforcement. Verbose logging shows additional information about the interaction with the client user interface.

What step is the update?

3) CAS.log: Provides information about the process of downloading software updates to the local cache and cache management.
