The Sims 2 is an old program that causes/d issues for many, I thought I would share my experience of getting past "The Sims 2 Update Error" when installing expansions.

You will need this file, so download it now: http://www.mediafire.com/download/lzbxtj51r6b6e6r/TS2\_update.zip

  1. Install the Sims 2 normally from disc
  2. Copy the files from inside the downloaded zip and folder to "c:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\The Sims 2" and confirm to override the files already there. This will make the program not need to update anymore!
  3. Install expansion packs in no particular order
  4. Enjoy playing the Sims 2!

I followed these steps and still got the same error.  On step 3, I didn't get a prompt to override any files.  Did I do something wrong there?

Did you override the files? You need to make sure the game does not need to update as that's where the problem occurs, so overriding the files is the correct thing to do.

Did you move them to the right location? If so, were the files unpacked?

When I installed the sims 2 through compatibility mode (Vista), it saved in "c:\program files (x86)\EA GAMES\The Sims 2". Not sure if that is why it saved with (x86) or not, but the (x86) would be different so without it, it won't replace the files if you've got it, too.

But what I did to get this to work was go into the zip file , highlight all the files in the folder and then clicked and dragged them. While still holding down the mouse button, I let the mouse hover over the Local Disk C: folder, let the folder open up, then scrolled, still holding the button down, to the program files (x86) folder (or just program files folder without the (x86) whichever you have EA games folder in), waited for the folder to open, hovered over EA games folder, let it open, and then hover on the Sims 2 folder and let go of the mouse button. Basically, you're grabbing all those files and dropping them on the sims 2 file, it should ask for permission and then ask if you want to replace files.
