Your account will be suspended

I received an email from "no-reply@microsoft.com" stating that my account will be suspended in 3 days unless I "keep it active". it prompts me to click on the "keep it active" link which I did not.

The email states that I have not used my account. That is untrue since I have used my account every day for the past 24 years. Hotmail account.

Is this a phishing email even though the address it comes from shows @microsoft ???

Also I have been seeing many (unsuccessful) sign-in attempts from China, Russia, Vietnam and Thailand.

Thank you for your help!

    Hello Juli

I'm Diane, an Office Apps & Services MVP specializing in Outlook, and I’m happy to help you today.

That is spam - a phishing attempt. Delete it. Do not click links in it.

Microsoft will never warn you the account will be disabled.

The unsuccessful attempts are unrelated - you'll get them if your address and an old password were in a database breach at any time in the past.

    Thank you Diane.

How do they use the @microsoft email account to send these phishing scams? They are getting better and better. It REALLY looks like it was sent from microsoft.

Thank you again. I had deleted it and reported it as "phishing" but still was not sure.

We'll the fact that it says your account is not active when you use it daily, should be enough proof - and you can check the url for the 'keep it active' link to see where it goes.

As for faking the address - they fake the From address. I'm surprised microsoft left it though. They often will use an email address as the display name and send it from another address. Most people just look at the displat name and ignore the underlyin address.

The email does not say that my account is inactive. It states that my account WILL be suspended in 3 days (on July 2nd).

That's what's concerning that the email address it comes from is @microsoft.

    Please see screenshot attached.

It said it will client suspended for inactivity - you were not inactive.

The From address is a valid microsoft.com address, but it is not a valid display name.

Microsoft does not send out email like this. If they are suspending your for a violation of terms of service, they suspend first, then email.

Check the message source - where does the Keep it active button link to?
