We use MS Teams at work. For one large group I want to share file in the files tab, but I want only certain peoople in the team to be able to edit that file. Is there a way to do it?

I was hoping that Team "Members" will be still able to view files in the files tab, but unfortunatelly they can not access the Files tab. I must set member to Owners for them to be able to use Files tab. Is there some kind of setting that I am missing?

Hello Alina_G,

Files in Teams group are stored in SharePoint, to edit team member access to the file, it is suggested to edit file access permission via SharePoint:

  1. In Teams, select one team group and the channel, and click files tab.
  2. In files tab, click Open in SharePoint.
  3. Select the file you want to edit and change access permission->click “”->Details

  1. In right pane, click “Manage access

  1. Set Team members access to “Can view”, and add specific users you’d like to grant access via “Grant Access”.

Here’s test on my side:

You may try above method to see if it meet your needs.

Besides, when you said “I must set member to Owners for them to be able to use Files tab”, in general, all Team member can see the files tab, to better know your situation, could you please share a screenshot of issue symptom with us for checking?

Best Regards,

Anna

I am having the same issue (trying to make a file read only for members of my Team). I followed the steps below, but it won't allow me to change from Can Edit to Read Only under the Direct Access tab under the Manage Access section. I can click it and it will pull up 'Can Edit' but there's no way to change it to View Only.

    Hi Anna,

Thank you for your help. Your reply was really helpful. And worket exactly as I needed it.

The problem with Members not being able to access files tab has resolved itself. Not sure if there was some lag after creating a team, but next day Members were able to access the tab as normal.

    Thank you, Alina
