Why are the "In site library" and "In channel library" different?

I created a new Microsoft Team & SharePoint for our department. There are two separate library's showing up in the documents. I have tried unsyncing and resyncing the document libraries from One Drive. Every time I do this, it gives me an error message that says my documents are already being synced, however they are still in correct. This is becoming an issue as people are unable to save files where they need to.

    Dear Danielle McKinstry

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

First, for your concerns about the In channels section and In site library section in SharePoint Document Library connected to Teams.

We'd like to share with you following information:

In Teams, we can have Public Channels and Private Channels. Users added into the Teams become members in all Public Channels by default. While we can only choose members from the Teams to be member of Private Channels.

The difference between the In channels section and In site library section are following:

In channels section contains all channels folders including Public Channels and Private Channels. Note: if a user is not added as a member of Private Channel, he won't be able to see the Private Channel folder in the In channels section.

In site library sections contains all Public Channels folders but not Private Channels folders. And it also contains all folders/files created from the SharePoint site, for example, folders/files created with "+New" from ribbon will show in In site library section.

So all members in the Teams can access the In channels section, but only member who is in the private channel can see Private Channel folder.

This change in SharePoint document library is used to distinguish folders that are related to channels in Teams and folders that are created from SharePoint site itself.

Second, you mentioned when you try to resync the document libraries from One Drive, you will got the error message, to help us narrow down the behavior and have a further investigate, we want to confirm some information with you:

    • Did click the message to check if the file is in the OneDrive folder?
    • Please try to create a new OneDrive folder then sync the file to the new folder to check the behavior.
    • May I know does all files have this sync behavior or only the specific one have?
    • Does other users in this Team have the same sync query when they sync the document libraries from One Drive?
    • How did you sync the library? Go to the library and then click Sync button or other way?

We’re looking forward to your reply and will continue to help you all the time!  If there are any misunderstanding or unclear, you can post back in your free time.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Stacey | Microsoft Community Moderator

    Hello Stacey.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but an employee from my team is having the same issue, however when she clicks on the "In Channels" folder it lists 2 documents. When she clicks on the "In Site Library" folder, it shows those 2 same documents as well as 20 others and a sub folder. Any idea why she sees two different things?

I had her click into TEAMS and it just shows those 2 files.

I'm having the same problem. The file folder in the in channels shows only 3 files, but the file folder, with the same name, under in site library shows a dozen files. When i do a file save as under word, I save it under the TEAM/SHAREPOINT Group name and it only syncs to the "in site library" and not the "In Channel" library. These folders should contain the same files and by synced. How do I make sure they sync properly? My preference would be that my in channel file folders and my in site library folders be the same. How do i get this to happen? or how do I eliminate one?

This is a total nightmare and a mess up as far as I can see, especially if (like many people) we still like using File Explorer to get to something quickly. They end up being different. Also in File Explorer you get the folder twice:

    Once under

    1. Team Name - Channel Name

    and once under

    2. Team Name - Documents - Channel Name

and they can have different files even though it is not private.

But under nbr. 2 you can choose to Sync and have kept on your device whereas in nbr. 1 there is no such thing.

Could MS make this any more confusing (and dangerous and you don't know where the files are going.

I have to explain this to a lot of newbies to tech and it is going to be a nightmare.

Two Images showing what it is like.

    1. Team Name - Channel Name

    2. Team Name - Documents - Channel Name

Also confusing as on the Channel in teams you can Sync but it produced a sync that does have the options to keep on the local PC or save space.
All very confusing (and I have been in systems/development for 50 years, so imagine what it does to non-techies minds).

Both my in channel and in site are identical. How can I remove this replication?
