opening files with .EXT extension

I'm running Windows 8.1 and am trying to open a file with .EXT as its extension.Windows media player is my default app for this extension but it can't/won't open it.Any suggestions??

    Thanks Bill but yes,according to my 'default programs and file associations'list inside control panel.There is talk of downloading specific codecs

    from the web but I'm trying to avoid this - if possible. Ian

    In other words Windows does not know what opens it.

    In my 8.1 file associations I have .EXT extension as Unknown Application.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

    It is either Norton Commander or a binary email script.
