"convert ink to text" in one note is greyed out

"Convert ink to text" in OneNote 2013 on my surface RT is disabled/grayed out,

What's the problem??

 "onenote assumes that the ink is a drawing that is why you can't convert to text. First you need to select the ink, right click and select "treat ink as handwriting". Then you should be able to convert to text." Thanks fgruber on mobileread.com.

Why it allows you to Ink to Math without doing that makes no sense at all.

This makes no sense

Go to DRAW menu, on the right hand side of the pen styles there is an inverted triangle which activates a drop down menu. Click/select it and then at the bottom you will see 'Pen Mode'. Click/select 'Pen Mode' and options for 'Create drawings Only, Crate Handwriting Only or Create Both will appear. Just select from these options.

Have you tried writing something with the pen, and the selecting "Ink to Text" after? For, this works to un-grey it and convert the text I just entered. However, I'm having other problems - it only works about half the time, and the other half pops up a little tiny window with a cancel button that never goes away. Once in a while, the whole thing crashes... anyone else?

I first came across this thread when trying to convert scanned in, hand written notes to text.

The "convert ink to text" works if you have used a stylus or mouse to hand write into OneNote.  Anything that has been written can then be converted to text.  It works, but only for handwritten text entered by stylus or mouse.

If you load a scanned in image of hand written text, you can select the picture, and right click to use the "Copy Text from Picture" and then Paste the resulting text.  In my case, OneNote can't  recognize my handwriting.

Under the Start Menu, I did a search on Handwriting, which finds a link to "Personalize Handwriting Recognition" (also called "Shape Collector.exe") to train it to better recognize my handwriting. 

Of course, I wrote my original notes with a five color pen on paper, and I am trying to train the system to recognize my handwriting entered with a mouse.  I am currently hunting down a tablet and stylus to try to train using something closer to what is in my notebooks.
