Dear Community,

No matter the add-in or if is it on word or excel, every time I try to open an add-in I get the error message:

ADD-IN ERROR
This add-in could not be started. Close this dialog to ignore the problem or click "restart" to try again.

I've tried reinstalling the add-in and updating Microsoft 365. Still didn't work worked.

I've also found some posts suggesting that I change the security zone settings in internet explorer. That didn't make a difference either.

I am running microsoft 365 apps for enterprise on windows 10. I noticed this first with the mendeley cite add-in.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi SóniaCunha,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

From your description, it seems that you cannot open an add-in in Word and Excel and encountered an error message. And you have tried updating Office and reinstalling add-in, however, the same problem still persists.

If my understanding is right, we have tested it on our side with the latest version of office and it works fine on our side.

At the same time, we also noticed that you have tried changing the security Zone settings in IE, If so, may I know if you have tried restart Excel and Word after changing the settings? If not, you can try it to check if the same problem will occur. You can also reboot your computer and try again.

In the meantime, we noticed that you are using Windows 10, users on updated versions of Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 typically have Edge used to render their Add-ins and it is possible that the Desktop App Web Viewer is corrupted. Take the steps below to reinstall it.

    1. Close all Office application.
    2. Run the following command on your machine with elevated privileges.
      powershell Add-AppxPackage -register -disable c:\windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Win32WebViewHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml
    3. Restart Word or Excel and load the add-in to check the issue is resolved

At the same time, to better understand your situation, could you provide the information below?

    1. Could you provide the version of your Office? You can go to Word > File > Account and provide the screenshot of it.
    2. May I know if the other add-ins have the same problem?

    Regards,

    Sukie
