Update KB5015882 continuously fails installing

I'm at my wits end with this update now. It keeps failing to install at 25% citing 0x8000ffff error code.

I've tested a number of things. SFC finds no issues that need fixing, I've restarted the Microsoft Store via WSReset.exe, I've run the Windows Update troubleshooter but it it did not fix the issue either.

I've got plenty of disk space free as well so that's not the issue either.

When I reboot, it tries installing the update but then repeatedly says something went wrong and then proceeds to rolling back. This has occurred consecutively for three days in a row now.

    Sumit,

I had failures with KB5014668 and KB5015814. I got the later to install by disabling Malwarebytes. I haven't tried this one yet as it is optional and by the new posts, appears to be failing just like the other two.

Can you please explain why anyone should have to do a repair reinstall to get an update to install? All other updates, .NET frameworks, Defender Definitions are and have been installing fine so if doesn't seem it's a failure of the update system as a whole. Only the cumulative updates are failing.

There must be thousands or more of users who don't even have a clue those updates haven't installed nor would they have any idea how to do a repair install. This has been going on for at least a month now and one would think MS might have thought about fixing it or at least acknowledging there is a problem and that they are working on it. As an advisor do you have any further information on a MS fix for this? Thanks for any insight on what might be going on.

    Hello EBergkvist,

I had the same problems with both KB5015882 update and its predecessor KB5015814 update. I downloaded the Windows 11 ISO file and setup Windows Pro again keeping my files and apps while doing so. Both updates downloaded and installed with no problems!

I couldn't even get either to install after disabling Malwarebytes. Defender Definitions and everything else is installing fine though. The most frustrating part is that booting up now it keeps going into "Installing update... something went wrong... reboot.... installing update... something went wrong... reboot" two/three times.

I'll hold off on the repair install for a while and just pause updates.

    Thanks.

Please do a repair install that reinstalls Windows, keeping apps, files and settings.

I should have clarified in my earlier reply that I had no problems updating both of those updates AFTER re-installing Windows 11 Pro using the ISO (Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com) download. The ISO download cleans up any corrupt files that may exist, just make sure you tell it to keep your files and apps in doing so. After the setup is done you'll have updates to install and those 2 will be included, they will hopefully download and install with no problems like they did for me.
