Office Home & Business 2016 mystery

In August 2018 I bought-for-life Office Home & Business 2016 and installed on my old DELL Windows 10 PC.  I now have a new PC and I am coming up the curve in finding out how to deactivate Office on my old PC to reinstall on my new PC.  For sure when I look up my Office Account (using Excel) on my DELL it shows Microsoft Office Home and Business 2016  and below 'About Excel' it shows Version 1910 (Build 12130.20410 Click-to-Run) though that could refer to Windows 10, I don't know.  Also, separately logging in to my Microsoft Account shows "Office Home & Business 2016 for PC", and, "Install on PC.  Added to your account on 28 August, 2018".  Besides deactivation it seems that the other option is to uninstall Office from the DELL.  So I opened Control Panel to find Office on the Uninstall Program List.  Now here is the mystery.  Two Microsoft Offices are listed:  Office 365 Size 956 MB Version 16.0.12130.20410 and Office Home and Business 2016 Size 0 (zero) Version 16.0.12130.20410.  Yes, that's size zero, zilch, nothing.  Can anyone explain why the non-installed 365 is 956 MB and the installed Home & Business is zero?

There are 2 answers to that question.

If you are seeing 365 in the Installed program list, that is because you probably had a factory installed 365 free trial.  If you look farther in the list you'll probably see your purchased 2019 also.

Take a look in any Office application, go to the File menu > Account command. Look under the Red Office logo. If you do have more than one copy of Office installed it will show up here more clearly.

You will see a version that looks approximately like this

That will be a clear indication of 2 copies installed.

The other possible answer is that MS programmers are sloppy / lazy. At various times the applications, like the "About" information we can see incorrect identification, 2016/2019 being called 365.  Don't get me started about Version and Build numbers.  Depending on where you look in Windows (and Office) you can get various different "Build" numbers. Very frustrating when you are trying to do trouble shooting.

You also see the same thing with "new features".  New features are supposed to be limited to 365, but every now and then we see one floating down in to 2019 and 2016.  In it's infinite wisdom, it decided to keep the same version number 16.* for both 365 and Office 2016, and later Office 2019.  So if they are not careful about how features are rolled out they show up in the wrong places. For example, the new Office 2019/365 tiles used in Windows also showed up on my Office 2016. I don't want them!  Office 2016 has different features than 2019 and than 365. I want to be able to visually identify the tile for each. But MS has lumped them all together! Phoey!

Can anyone explain why the non-installed 365 is 956 MB and the installed Home & Business is zero?

MS does not know how to count ...

This will be a 2 step process ...

.

First, you have to uninstall 365 before you can activate 2016 H&B.

.

Uninstall Office 2016 / 365 – 2007

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/uninstall-office-from-a-pc-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

Method 1: Uninstall from Control Panel (or Settings dialog)

Method 2: Completely uninstall Office with the uninstall support tool (SetupProd_OffScrub.exe)

Method 3: Remove manually (Registry Hack)

The Method 1, “Normal uninstall”, is designed with the assumption that you will be re-installing Office. It does NOT delete everything. It leaves configuration files like NORMAL.DOTM and other templates etc. It also leaves configuration Registry entries. Normally these “carry-overs” are safe. But if method 1 didn’t fix your problem, they may be the cause.

Note:Method 1 includes links to Office version specific re-install instructions

.

Second, Office 2016 can only be active on one computer, so as you know, you have to "deactivate" from the first computer before you can activate it on the new computer.

On the new computer you will have to log in to the myaccount site, and "Remove" the license from the old computer, then click on the "install" button to activate it on the new computer.

Transfer Office 365 Consumer To another Computer

The “Office Install” MS support site has detailed instructions for this process.  Essentially it is a 3 step process which can all be done from the new computer.

The first step is to log in  to the MyAccount site on the new computer.

Manage Devices / Shares  https://account.microsoft.com/services/office/billing -

The Second step is to remove permission to use full functionality on the old computer, you “Remove” (consumer) / “deactivate” (business) it.

“Remove” (consumer) / “Deactivate” (business) Office 365/2016/2019

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/deactivate-office-365-if-you-see-a-limit-reached-error-767e3560-96ed-4b1c-806d-2fe01c529b1b

If you have an Office 365 subscription or 2016 or 2019 license, you can deactivate Office on a PC or Mac that you're no longer using. Deactivating an Office install doesn't uninstall Office, remove Office documents, or cancel your Office 365 subscription.  It just removes your license from that computer to free it up to use on another computer.  The Office installation on that computer goes into “limited function” mode. It allows read and print only. You cannot save new files or save changes to existing ones.

"D:\Public\Pictures\Office 365 Consumer MyAccount Devices.png"

The third step is to install on the new computer. The install will also assign a license “count” to it to “activate” the programs.

Here are the specific links you need:

1.   MyAccount - **http://office.com/myaccount**

2.   Deactivate instructions- https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Deactivate-an-Office-365-install-767e3560-96ed-4b1c-806d-2fe01c529b1b

3.   Install on new PC - https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Download-and-install-or-reinstall-Office-365-or-Office-2016-on-a-PC-or-Mac-4414eaaf-0478-48be-9c42-23adc4716658

Note: Because this process is done through your web browser, you can deactivate an Office 365 install from any device. It can take up to 72 hours for the Office install to detect that it's been deactivated.

I still do not understand why having installed stand alone Office Home & Business 2016 my Uninstall Programs list shows Office 365 as the installed version. Maybe by the time I purchased Office Home & Business on the high street it had been superseded by Office 365 in Microsoft's world.  Currently Office 365 subscription is offered in Home (5 PCs) and Personal versions.  So as mine is stand alone I suppose I'll be OK assuming it is equivalent to Personal for the transfer process.

Many thanks for your most comprehensive guidance in what Microsoft does not make easy.
