In most cases, the etdctrl.exe is an ETD Control Center application from ELAN Microelectronics Corp. - thsi applications is a touchpad solutions for notebooks, it enables the user the possibility to use multi-finger moves on the touch pad in a very similar way as in the smartphones screen, check more info on the project pages on http://www.emc.com.tw/eng/ap02\_01\_04\_01\_tps.asp - See more at: http://systemexplorer.net/file-database/file/etdctrl-exe#sthash.DFpITxnF.dpuf

ie. you need this running if you want to use fancy gestures on your lappy touchpad.

After following several different links on the forum, possible answer was activation by malware or a virus. Use Norton IS so "shouldn't" be a virus.

Downloaded MS Malware detection/removal pgm from MS site and ran Full check (All files) ..... found and removed Trojan downloader html, and Trojan clicker html.

So far no re-occurance of ETD control centre icon appearing.

    Thanks MS.

Well, with me it's just the programm, no virus. It's prety useless to me, since I mostly use the desktop-view of 8.1.  So I disabled the automatic start-up.

Trusting Norton is not much wiser then trusting McAfee. They cant't keep up with developments. Panda is an online solution, way better, doesn't clutter your system. Do use the payed version, though the free is still an improvement. It works well  with both emsisoft online armor and emsisoft antimalware.
