What is the relevance of "usb recovery thingy"?  Were you reinstalling via a Recovery Partition on the hard drive, or some Recovery Drive on a USB where you selected the Refresh option.

If you have not changed any Bios Settings then you have nothing to worry about.  If you have changed Bios Settings, then there is an option in the Bios to restore safe or default settings.  There is also a boot options (boot order) setting for you to adjust if you want.  You do want  CD/DVD  ahead of hard drive at least, how the others appear is up to you.  It should only boot from USB if there is a USB attached, and if it is bootable.

You can only do so much to prevent glitches, bad luck with computers is an occupational hazard I'm afraid.  You counter them by having a good backup plan.  I recommend regularly doing full Partition images so you don't lose too much next time bad luck occurs.

Is your BIOS setup to boot from your Recovery Drive?  It needs to Boot from DVD ahead of Hard Drive in the list of booting options.

See if you can launch the Memory Test program from the Advanced Options Command Prompt.

If you can get to the Command Prompt the command required to launch the Memory Diagnostic Tool is MdSched.exe

See what other options are available to you via these too.

Most new machines come with a recovery partition allowing you to go back to the time of purchase, you will have to check your user guides (or the manufacturer's Web Site) for instructions.  Choosing that path requires you to save all valuable data first.

These options are built-in to Windows 8 also.
