Fonts Squished and Bold

Hi Everyone!

I'm posting about an issue I've had with my Windows 8.1 computer for a number of months now.

A number of months ago Internet Explorer began displaying bold and squished text on a number of websites. Example attached. This problem persisted with IE11 but only occurred on some websites, not all. I then switched my main browser to Chrome and there was no issue.

Then the issue began to appear in Mail (example attached) a few weeks later. Recently Chrome began to have the same problem. I am now using Firefox and the issue isn't in Firefox - yet. But this issue still persists in IE, Chrome and Mail.

I have tried re-installing a number of fonts and resetting my default font settings - nothing is working.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

    DISM

Given that DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth completed successfully you should definitively retry a DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth as the error 0x0800f081f you got last time might have been due to a temporary Windows Update problem.

If error 0x0800f081f persists I would suggest you carefully go through the Windows Update error 800F081F article.

    CHKDSK

I haven’t run CHKDSK on my PC for a while but will do and update you as soon as I have the opportunity. In the meantime you can run it again to see if it reports errors – they won’t be fixed though:

    • [Win] + X > Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Type CHKDSK %SystemDrive% + [Enter] (no /F switch this time)

CLEANUP YOUR SYSTEM FROM UNECESSARY FILES

Although I don’t think this is going to help given the nature of your issue this is worth trying:

    • [Win] + R
    • Type CleanMgr + OK (the Disk Cleanup will make a 1^st^ analysis…)
    • Click on the Clean up system files button (the tool will make a new analysis that takes longer…)
    • Check everything BUT System queued Windows Error Report…
    • Click OK and confirm files deletion (a reboot might happen)

CLEANUP INTERNET EXPLORER & RESET IT TO DEFAULTS

    • Launch the desktop version of Internet Explorer
    • Click on the gear in the top right corner > Internet options
    • On the General tab / Browsing history section click on the Delete… button
    • Check everything then hit Delete
    • Go to the Advanced tab
    • Click on the Reset… button next to Resets Internet Explorer’s settings…
    • Check the Delete personal settings box
    • Click on the Reset button (a reboot is required)

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Lz.

    Hi Lz.,

Thanks so much again for the quick reply.

I did not try the other DISM commands before but I did now. Images are attached of what I get. I also tried CHKDSK. After a reboot I breifly saw something below the spinning dots (while windows is loading) that said to skip checking disk press something in one second. I didn't press anything. The machine then booted up right away.

I wasn't sure how to get the results from CHKDSK so I did a search for it. Apparently I'm supposed to find it in the Event Viewer under Windows Logs -> Application. I have searched all through there (there aren't many entries) and none of them pertain to CHKDSK. I tried doing the command and rebooting a second time but the report still isn't there. I also checked and the bold font problem still persists.

    Hi Andrew,

    Not a really good sign...

Did you already run **DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /**ScanHealth and **DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /**CheckHealth? What was the outcome? If you did not I would suggest you do before trying to address error 0x0800f081f.

To be on the safe side I would suggest you also check your system partition although I can't think your problem can relate to any file system errors:

    • [Win] + X > Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Type CHKDSK %SystemDrive% /F + [Enter]
    • Y when it says "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use...to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Lz.

    Hi Lz.,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried SFC /ScanNow before and it found no problems. I tried it again right now and it still found no problems. I then tried DISM after a clean reboot and that doesn't seem to be working either. This is what it said:

    Hi Andrew,

I would suggest you go through steps 1 and 2 of Wiki article Troubleshooting Component Store / System Files Corruption

If step 1 (SFC /ScanNow) reports errors it couldn't all fix please repeat it 3 times before going into step 2 (DISM...).

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Lz.
