Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7.

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

http://mymfe.microsoft.com/Windows%207/Feedback.aspx?formID=195

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

Refer to the link here: Make older programs run in this version of Windows

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sincerely,

Marilyn

I really miss the program.  Mainly I miss the cutting out,  and adding a replacement for what I cut out.

I found another program that will do, but in no way is it as good as Picture It.

Happy you found a way - I am running Windows 7.

    Hi Nichegirl,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum.

Microsoft Picture IT has been discontinued in windows7 and that has been replaced with windows live photo gallery.

You can download Windows Live Photo Gallery free and install on Windows 7.

Please see the following link for more information.

     Hope it helps.

Really annoyed with Microsoft. WHY would you do away with the best little program PictureIt that customers purchased and pretend that Windows Live Photo Gallery was an adequate replacement?? It is NOT adequate. IT IS TOTALLY INFERIOR> Microsoft BRING BACK PICTURE IT FOR WINDOWS 10. You owe it to your loyal customer base. STOP MAKING MUGS OUT OF US!!!!

Thanks Shekhar S, but I am a graphic artist and my big problem seems to be that almost all my work for the last 8 years is in .mix format because it allows me to edit the layers in the projects at will much like Adobe Photoshop.  I can't seem to find any other program that supports a .mix format or that I can convert a .mix format to that will keep the layers intact and available for editing.  I could convert them all to .jpg or .png but that would "flatten" the image and remove the layer editing capability even in Photoshop Elements.  Can you tell me if there is an possible format I can convert a .mix file to that will allow me to keep the layers in the literally thousands of projects I have completed in my portfolio over the years.  I have read about .png+ format but that is no longer supported either.  Without this capability, it appears that I am tied to Windows XP for my existing business designs until my old XP PC dies and then my business designs are lost forever.  I find it really unfathomable that Microsoft has decided to leave so many customers out in the cold with a format they created and that was still being marketed in this decade with no alternatives other than to kiss their work goodbye.

I was able to install and use Picture It 2001 on my Windows 7 PC with only one minor problem. First run the Picture It installer in Windows 98 mode. Once the program is installed, set it's executable to Windows 98 mode too. I found that I can continue to edit images (I only edit jpgs, haven't tried any other file extension) like I used to, however the "Save As" option doesn't work. My workaround is to make a copy of the image I'm going to edit first then save my changes to either the original or the copy by simply clicking "Save" and overwriting the file. I hope this helps!
