2014-06-25T06:36:21+00:00 Hi Adam,
This issue could occur due to some incorrect settings or due to an issue with the Audio driver. First, I would suggest you to try playing the files through the built-in Music app to check if the issue is with Windows Media player or the Audio device. If the file plays in the Music app, then the issue must be with the Windows Media player. In this case, I would suggest you to run the Windows Media player settings troubleshooter and check. Refer to these steps:
- Press Windows key +F to bring up the search Charms bar.
- Select settings in the drop down menu below search and type Troubleshooting.
- Click on Troubleshooting and select the view all option on the left pane.
- Click on Windows Media player settings troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
If the file doesn’t play in the built-in Music player as well, then the issue might be with the Audi device or its driver. In this case, I would suggest you to run the Audio troubleshooter and check. Refer to these steps:
- Press Windows key +F to bring up the search Charms bar.
- Select settings in the drop down menu below search and type Troubleshooting.
- Click on Troubleshooting and select the view all option on the left pane.
- Click on Playing Audio troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
If the Audio troubleshooter didn’t detect any incorrect settings, then it is possible that the Audio driver is either corrupt or incompatible. I would suggest you to install the latest Audio driver from the computer manufacturer’s website and check. Try these steps and let us know the results.

2014-06-25T09:24:08+00:00 Hi Adam,
If the Music app is able to play the .mp3 files, then it means that the computer is able to play the files and there is no issues with the audio. The issue could be caused due to some incorrect settings in the Windows Media player. You have mentioned that the troubleshooter didn’t detect any incorrect settings. In this case, I would suggest you to turn off the Windows Media player and then turn it back and check. Refer to these steps:
- Press Windows key + X, click on ‘Programs and features’.
- Click on ‘Turn Windows features ON or OFF’ in the left pane.
- Uncheck the box against Windows Media player in the ‘media features’ section.
- Restart the computer of prompted.
- Follow the same steps and check the box against Windows Media player to turn it back ON.
Try these steps and let us know the results.
