Weird pop-up ad on start-up - Windows 11

Ever since the last update, a website (exness.com) automatically opens on my default browser (Google Chrome) upon startup. I checked my browser history and the first time I've come across this site is when the pop-ups first started - roughly 3 weeks ago.

To resolve the issue, I have tried:

  1. Resetting the Chrome Browser
  2. Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome
  3. Clearing data like cookies, cache, etc.

Upon further investigation online, I learned that it could be a Windows issue and I was advised to turn off notifications and Personalised Ads on Windows 11 in the privacy settings.

I also ran a long and detailed scan on McAfee to detect and remove any malware or adware that could have entered the system, but the scan came back clean.

Unfortunately, none of the above worked.

Any idea why this could be happening? Anything else I should try to get rid of this?

    Hello,Rachana Yogamurthy

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft community.

Knowing that you have a specific website that opens in the Google Chrome browser at startup, I see that you've tried reinstalling the browser and clearing the cached data, which does help, and has ruled out an anomaly in the application itself. Typically, this is not a system level issue and may be related to the application itself.

We recommend that you consider customized settings in Google Chrome Browser, such as add-ons, Google accounts, and other factors. Considering that Chrome Browser is a third-party product, we recommend that you consult Google's official support for a more specialized solution for their product.

Based on my personal experience, I would like to help you to solve the problem as soon as possible, maybe you can try the following program.

    • Click on the Jigsaw icon in the top right corner of your browser to see the add-ons you have added, and then remove them in turn.
    • Change your Google account to test if the problem is reproduced under a new account.

We sincerely hope that your problem will be solved as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

    Best Regards,
