I have just bought a new Surface Book, completed all the updates to v 1709 and I have tried to set up Windows Hello.

I am asked to input my pin which i do, and then I just get the message "Sorry something went wrong, couldnt turn on the camera, make sure its working properly"

I have confirmed that the camera is working to take photos.

Help please.

    Try the following...

    To repair your Windows Hello

Open File Explorer and browse to this location:

    C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC

    Delete everything within that folder

Make sure to do this as Administrator logged in.

Also, just keep clicking Continue if you get the message "You don't currently have permissions for this folder"

If you can't get past that screen then right click the NGC folder and go to properties and click the Security tab.

    Click Advanced.

Click Change beside Owner and type in Administrators and click OK.

Now try emptying the NGC folder again, once done close all the windows.

    Go to Settings-> Accounts->Sign-in Options

Click Add a PIN again and set your PIN

    Try again.

If that doesn't work try creating a new account profile.

    Could be a policy.

Go to search and type gpedit.msc and open that.

Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components>Biometrics

Open Allow the use of biometrics and set it to enabled.

    Reboot.

    BTW, which surface is this?

Can you go to start - settings - update and security.

Make sure there are no pending updates.

Also make sure camera is working.

Click search and type camera and open the camera app.

Make sure the camera is functioning.

You stated that you just purchased this?

Normally you don't have these issues with the windows hello.

My recommendation if you can't get it working is take back where you got it from and get a full refund and buy again.

DO not do an exchange with Microsoft cause they will just give you a refurbished one.

Sorry for the inconvenience and you're welcome.

    Check your antivirus software

In your antivirus app, look for settings related to blocking access or permission to use your webcam. For help, visit your antivirus software company’s website.

Check for an outdated webcam driver

Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and then select Device Manager from the search results.

Find your webcam under Imaging devices or Sound, video and game controllers.

Press and hold (or right-click) the name of your webcam, and then select Properties.

Select the Driver tab, select the Driver Details button, and look for a file name that includes stream.sys. If it’s there, your webcam was designed before Windows 7 and you'll have to replace it with a newer webcam.

If you don't find a file name that includes stream.sys, try rolling back your webcam driver.

    Roll back your webcam driver

In Device Manager, press and hold (or right-click) your webcam, and then select Properties.

Select the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver, and then choose Yes. (Note that some drivers don’t provide a rollback option.)

After the rollback is complete, restart your PC, and then try opening the Camera app again.

If rolling back didn’t work or isn’t available, uninstall your webcam driver and scan for hardware changes.

Uninstall your webcam driver and scan for hardware changes

In Device Manager, press and hold (or right-click) your webcam, and then select Properties.

Select the Driver tab, select Uninstall > Delete the driver software for this device, and then select OK.

In Device Manager, on the Action menu, select Scan for hardware changes. Wait for it to scan and reinstall updated drivers, restart your PC, and then try opening the Camera app again.

If your webcam still doesn’t work, try looking for help on the webcam manufacturer’s website.
