How can I restore the default file associations in Windows 7?

A friend of mine accidentally selected the option which makes Adobe Acrobat the default option for opening ALL file types in Windows 7.

How can I help him restore the defaults to what they were?  I'm finding that having him edit the individual file associations (ie Internet explorer for .url) is not working.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hello every one....I think everyone must experience this issue, I got too, but my mind fixed it within half hour. I also read many replies but  no one was helpful.

People just restore your computer by any date you want. I was lucky I got yesterday date to restore my computer. Try it , my issue got fixed !! no need to install any registry or any other missing file its a bug or virus even Microsoft has no clue..

What happens if all of the icons are set to use Java.exe as their default, java has been uninstalled and no restore points are accessible to work.  NONE of my .exe files are able to find their association.  Cmd.exe fails.  Its BAD!

You can go to the Control Panel, Default Programs. From there you can select which program opens which extension.
