When I try to update my windows software, I get "error found:  code 80070057".   Please help me to correct this.   None of the self-help suggestions are effective.

Please try the following steps:

Running the **System Update Readiness Tool**…
1.     You will first need to download the utility.<br><br><br>·          System Update Readiness Tool for<br>**Windows Vista**<br><br><br><br>·          System Update Readiness Tool for<br>**Windows Vista x64**<br><br><br><br>If you do not know which to choose *click here for help*.<br><br><br>2.     Click Download, and then<br>Open when prompted.<br><br><br>3.     Once the download completes click<br>OK on the Windows Update Standalone Installer notification.<br><br><br>4.     You will see The updates are being installed with a progress bar – do not cancel this process.<br><br><br>5.     You will receive an onscreen notification saying that the update has been successfully installed.<br><br><br>6.     The results of this tool are output to a log file stored on your computer.<br><br><br>7.     The next group of troubleshooting will assist you in adding the file to your<br>Desktop.
Running the **System File Checker**…
1.     Click Start, click<br>All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.<br><br><br>2.     Click Continue or supply Administrator credentials if prompted.<br><br><br>3.     In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press<br>Enter:<br><br><br>sfc /scannow<br><br><br>4.     You should see the following on-screen messages:<br><br><br><br> Beginning the system scan. This process will take some time.<br><br><br>Beginning verification phase of system scan.<br><br><br>Verification % complete. <br> --- <br><br><br><br>5.     Once the scan has completed you will receive an onscreen message.<br><br><br>·          If the message indicates that it “found no integrity violations” proceed to the next<br>group of troubleshooting.<br><br><br>·          If the message indicates that if “found corruption but repaired it” (or) “found corruption that it could not repair” please proceed with the next<br>step.<br><br><br>6.     In the Command Prompt window type the following, and press<br>Enter after each line:<br><br><br><br> cd %homepath%\Desktop<br><br><br>copy %windir%\LOGS\CBS\CBS.LOG<br><br><br>copy %windir%\LOGS\CBS\CHECKSUR.LOG<br><br><br>findstr /C:”[SR]” CBS.LOG >SFCRESULTS.TXT<br><br><br>del CBS.LOG<br><br><br>exit <br> --- <br><br><br><br>7.     The above commands will place a copy of the<br>System File Checker (SFC) and the System Update Readiness Toolresults onto your desktop.<br><br><br>8.     These two files will be named SFCRESULTS.TXT (and) CHECKSUR.LOG<br><br><br>9.     Please open, and then paste a copy of these results in your reply.
Running **Hard Disk Error Checking**…
1.     Click Start, and then click on<br>Computer.<br><br><br>2.     Right-click the hard drive Windows is installed to, typically (C:), and then select<br>Properties.<br><br><br>3.     Click on the Tools tab, and then, under<br>Error-checking, click Check Now.<br><br><br>4.     Click Continue, or provide Administrator credentials if prompted.<br><br><br>5.     Ensure both check boxes are selected, and then click<br>Start.<br><br><br>·          Automatically fix the file system errors<br><br><br>·          Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors<br><br><br><br>6.     You will receive a notification asking if you want to schedule the check next time Windows Starts.<br><br><br>7.     Click on Schedule disk check to ensure that the check performs after you restart the computer.<br><br><br>8.     Note that this check can take several errors which is dependent on the size of your hard drive.<br><br><br>9.     Restart the computer, and let the check run.

Prior to attempting the installation you will want to use the System Configuration tool to run Selective Startup. Once you’ve placed the system in Selective Startup you can attempt the installation of the previously failed Service Pack.

How-to run Windows in Selective Startup…
1.     Click Start, click<br>Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, click<br>Administrative Tools, and then double-click System Configuration.<br><br><br>2.     Click Continue, or provide Administrator credentials if prompted.<br><br><br>3.     Click the General tab, and click<br>Selective startup.<br><br><br>4.     Under Selective startup uncheck<br>Load startup items.<br><br><br>5.     Click the Services tab, check the<br>Hide all Microsoft services box, and then click Disable all.<br><br><br>6.     Click the Apply, then<br>OK, and then Restart.
