Outlook 2019 pro cannot connect to Exchange.

Hi,

I recently had an expert change my Outlook 2019 pro setup change from Pop3/imap to exchange.

I now have the situation when sometimes I get the message that Outlook cannot connect to the server/exchange. I try and close down Outlook and I get the message Outlook not responding, then it starts to close down saying a report will be sent to Microsoft about the problem. I think at least ten reports have been sent but still getting the problem. When I shut down my PC it gives me the message that the app Outlook is still trying to close do I still want to shut down. I just click yes. This can last for up to two/three days or only a few minutes before it corrects itself.

How do I resolve this please.

If I have posted this in the wrong place can the administrators move it to the correct one.

    Hello Paddy

Thanks for your reply. Your version undoubtedly supports modern authentication.

Generally speaking, emails configured as Exchange protocol will not be lost when deleted from Outlook, because the emails are stored in the Exchange server instead of locally. If you are worried, you can export your two account emails in advance. You can refer to the following link for the steps: Export emails, contacts, and calendar items to Outlook using a .pst file - Microsoft Support

I also noticed that your Outlook version is 32-bit. Although I don't know if this will cause problems, I recommend that you choose the 64-bit version when reinstalling.

I hope the above information can help you, and I look forward to your further response.

    Best regards,

    Hardyjoe.J

    Hi Hardyjoe.J

Found the version number it is Microsoft® Outlook® 2019 MSO (Version 2410 Build 16.0.18129.20100) 32-bit

In step 5 above if I perform this task is there a risk of loosing my emails or is it only a risk if I uninstall then reinstall Outlook?

    Many thanks.

    Kind regards,

    Paddy

    Hello Paddy

    Thanks for your further response.

According to your description, if there is no problem with the configuration file itself, then the problem is most likely in the email account or Outlook application.

Let's check the version number. It seems that you are having trouble finding the version number. Please refer to the picture below.

    1. Click on File

    1. Click on Office account

    1. Find About Outlook

    1. Check the version number.

Make sure that the version is higher than 11601.10000 and that the version is not LTSC, in case your problem is caused by modern authentication.

You mentioned that both you and your friend's Hotmail accounts have this problem, which makes me more suspicious that the problem lies in the application. If you can confirm that the version is correct, it is recommended to try to repair Outlook. If the problem still exists, try to uninstall and reinstall Outlook.

To prevent email loss, you can go to Outlook Web(https://outlook.live.com) to confirm whether your emails with your two Hotmail accounts are synchronized normally on the web page.

I hope the above information can help you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

    Best regards,

    Hardyjoe.J

    Hi Hardyjoe.J

Thank you for your response. I am sorry for the late reply but for some reason I did not get an email informing me that you had replied.

There are two users on my PC and both of us have an hotmail.com email address and both of us are having the same problem. We can both login directly to our respective email accounts via the Edge browser.

When I was using POP3/Imap I was occasionally having a problem with linking with my hotmail.com account. That is why I changed to an exchange account.

This was done on the 2/10/2024 and I had no problems using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019 with Outlook 2019 connecting with my hotmail.com exchange account for about 3 weeks then I got the problem saying trying to connect. Then I would have difficulty in closing Outlook as I would get the massage at the top of the screen saying Outlook not responding.

Re 2 in your reply everything looks ok.

Re 3 repair and my email address are greyed out.

R3 4 I cannot seem to get the version number to display. I have tried everything that is suggested.

Re 5 I will try that as and when I can. Well not be able to do it for a couple of days.

    Kind regards,

    Paddy

    Dear PADDYCL

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble connecting to Exchange using Outlook 2019 Professional Plus.

Thank you for providing a detailed description of the problem, which helped me understand your issue. There are some questions I would like to confirm with you to help us solve the problem.

    1. How many email accounts do you have configured in Outlook 2019 Professional Plus? If there are multiple email accounts, can you confirm that a single email account has a problem?

If there is only one email, then it is obvious that this email is causing the problem. Can you access your email normally in https://outlook.live.com?

    1. You mentioned that your email settings changed from POP3/IMAP to Microsoft Exchange. Did the problem occur immediately after the settings were changed? Try to go to your Outlook, click File-Account Settings-Account Settings in the upper left corner to confirm whether your email is correctly configured for Microsoft Exchange. If not, you can try to delete your email on this page and reconfigure it.
    2. Try to repair the Outlook profile. If the problem is caused by a corrupted profile, you can try to repair the Outlook profile. Or go to "File" > "Account Settings" > "Account Settings", select your account, and then click "Repair". If the repair is grayed out, it means that Outlook thinks the profile is fine.
    3. Update Outlook: Make sure your Outlook is up to date. Sometimes, updates contain fixes for known issues. Go to File-Office Account-About Outlook to confirm your version information. My Outlook version is currently 16.0.14332.20358. Recently, due to the problem of new authentication, your version needs to be at least 16.0.11601.10000, and if your Outlook version is LTSC, it does not support new authentication. You can refer to the picture and link below:

    1. If you confirm that there are no problems with the above and your version is correct, you can try to repair Office. (Because Outlook is included in Office, we need to repair the entire Office)

For the specific repair process, you can refer to the following website:

Repair an Office application - Microsoft Support

As for sending a report to Microsoft about this issue, to be honest, no support staff will follow up on this issue, Microsoft will only count the number of this issue.

I hope the above information helps you. If you have any progress on the issue, please feel free to provide me with more information. I will be happy to help you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Sincerely,

    Hardyjoe.J|Microsoft Community Support Specialist
