Problems with Windows Update KB5008215

My computer is a Lenovo T490 ThinkPad running Windows 11 Pro upgraded from Windows 10 Pro. Has anyone had issues with Windows Update KB5008215?

After installing this update, numerous issues arose, which even uninstalling the update did not resolve. OneDrive, Google Drive, Amazon Photos and Box Cloud would not start up with Windows. Not only wouldn't any of these services start up with Windows, the option, the app itself and the off/on toggle switch had disappeared from settings-apps-startup. Ultimately I discovered that by starting each of these services manually - with the exception of Box - I was able to get the startup with Windows function restored. After the manual restart, I got a fly-out messages that said, "Now configured to run when you log in" and by some miracle the app and toggle switch were restored to settings-apps-startup. To get Box working, I had to uninstall the app and reinstall it; trying to start it manually didn't work.

This update also messed with the ability of several third party apps to start with Windows. Somehow in the options section of the affected apps, the option to start with Windows had been mysteriously unchecked. Fortunately, rechecking the start with Windows option got these apps working again properly.

Finally, this update messed with the choose where to get apps setting (settings-apps-apps & features). It had originally been set to "anywhere but warn me before installing app that's not from the Microsoft Store." After the update, none of the choices in this option worked. Fortunately, changing the option to "anywhere" allowed me to install third party apps.

Because I had uninstalled the update, it downloaded itself again and without thinking I allowed it to install. The same issues resurfaced with the exception of the choosing where to get apps setting. I've uninstalled it again, of course, and would appreciate knowing if anyone else has had similar issues with this update.

This upfate fails to install & just rolls back.

Given the havoc this update causes, be glad it won't install.

Thanks for the update. Imo I would block the update permanently as while you have be able to undo the problems it has caused, the next time it installs it may introduce further problems which cannot be fixed as easily.

I would also consider using disk imaging software like Macrium Reflect so you can easily roll back from a failed update.

Hello, I’m Virginia, I have 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.
Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems.

I’ve not noticed any problems with that update.
As you’re experiencing problems with it have you tried system restore? If it fails then please try the restore within safe mode with networking.

If you’ve fixed all the problems again & all is working well then you can block the update:
You can use this MS tool to show & hide problematic drivers or updates:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930.
You can also try the windows update minitool to block the update permanently:

Thank you for such a speedy reply. I appreciate the info on blocking problematic updates. After posting my issue in the Forum, I did an online chat with MS support. The tech said he wasn't aware of any issues either with that particular update. I initially contacted Lenovo support and system restore was one of the solutions we discussed but nixed for several reasons.

At the moment, everything is working as it should. I've put a week's delay on receiving updates but eventually will have to deal with this particular update. My thought is to let the update install and if it again screws things up as before, I can go about restoring/resetting things as I described. And if that doesn't work, there's system restore.
