It seems like the pinyin keyboard for traditional characters disappeared. Is there no way to type zhuyin for traditional anymore? How do I ask for it to be added back?

Before the latest windows update I could use pinyin to type traditional Chinese characters, but I got a new laptop and updated to windows 11, and I can't find the option under "add a keyboard" in the language options. I don't have the bopomofo keyboard memorized, so I can't just use that (my keyboard only has the English alphabet).

    Dear Sharon (MU-Student)!

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

I understand your confusion. Windows 11 has indeed made some adjustments to the input method, but you can still use Pinyin to input Traditional Chinese. Let's go through this step by step:

    1. Add the Traditional Chinese language:
    • Open Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region
    • Click "Add a language"
    • Search for and select "Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan)" or "Chinese (Traditional, Hong Kong SAR)"
    • Install the language pack
    1. Configure the input method:
    • Under the added Traditional Chinese language, click "Language Options"
    • In the "Keyboards" section, click "Add a keyboard"
    • Find and add "Microsoft Zhuyin"
    1. Set up Microsoft Zhuyin:
    • Once added, click the three dots (...) next to "Microsoft Zhuyin"
    • Select "Language Options"
    • Under the "General" tab, make sure "Use Pinyin" is checked
    • Under the "Pinyin Settings" tab, you can further customize Pinyin input
    1. Switch input mode:
    • Once installed, use Windows key + spacebar to switch to the Traditional Chinese input method
    • Click the language icon on the taskbar and select "Microsoft Zhuyin"
    • Use Ctrl+Shift+F to switch between Zhuyin and Pinyin mode

If you still can't find or use Pinyin to input Traditional Chinese after following these steps, you can try:

    1. Install the language pack:
    • Search and install "Traditional Chinese Local Experience Kit" in Microsoft Store
    • Repeat the above steps after installation
    1. Restart your computer:
    • After completing the above settings, restart your computer to make all changes take effect
    1. Use a third-party input method:
    • If Microsoft's own input method does not meet your needs, you can consider installing other third-party input methods that support Traditional Chinese Pinyin input, such as Google Pinyin Input Method, etc.

If the problem persists, you may need to:

    • Run the Input Method Troubleshooter
    • Reset language settings
    • Contact Microsoft Support

I hope these suggestions can help you solve the problem. If you encounter any difficulties or need more detailed guidance when performing these steps, please feel free to let me know.

Thank you for your understanding and support!

    Best regards,

Step 1-4 don't work for me. The input is not listed as an option to select. I went as far as removing the language and re-added back in.

The kit as described in step 5 isn't available for me to download. The button is grey out. Any idea as to why it is greyed out? The button appears active in bright orange when I test and check other languages?

Finally figured out! OK, after adding "Microsoft Bopomofo" Keyboard, go to its "... Keyboard Options", then go to "Key assignment" (below "General"), select "HanYu Pinyin" in the drop down for Keyboard layout.

I did install the "Traditional Chinese Local Experience Kit" in Microsoft Store per "Yang.Z - MSFT" suggestion and re-started my laptop, but not sure if it was necessary as it seemed to be for Windows 10. See link here if the above "HanYu Pinyin" wasn't showing up - 中文 (繁體) 當地體驗套件 - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

    Good luck!
