Stereo Mix not Working

I'm posting this again because none of the answers I can find on the internet helped me get Stereo Mix working until today. I assume you have the Stereo Mix device in the recording tab in the Sound control panel dialog:

If not, then make sure you select "Show disabled devices" and enable the Stereo Mix audio device:

In order for Stereo Mix to work, you must also set the associated device in the Playback tab:

For example, on my system "Realtek USB Audio" audio device (not the Headphones or Digital Output - these will not work with Stereo Mix) must be set as the default playback device. If you see "Not plugged in" you won't be able to set it as the default playback device:

In this case, just plug in a 3.5mm audio audio cable to the speaker out on the back of your motherboard. This is usually the green colored audio jack on your motherboard. This can be a "dummy" cable that doesn't go anywhere, but the audio device needs to at least think it's plugged into something.

If you see the green sound meter moving on the Stereo Mix device in the Recording tab, then you know it's working. Now you should be able to open any recording software, set it to Stereo Mix for the input device, and hit record:

If you want to listen to the Stereo Mix device through your Bluetooth speakers or headset, then you have to enable the "Listen to this device" in the Stereo Mix Properties dialog box and select the speakers or headset you want to use to monitor Stereo Mix:

I hope this helps!

Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

There can be several reasons why the Stereo Mix feature is not working in Windows 11. Here are some steps you can try to solve the issue:

    1. Make sure Stereo Mix is enabled: Right-click on the volume icon in the taskbar and select "Open Sound Settings." Click on "Sound Control Panel" under "Related Settings." In the "Recording" tab, right-click on an empty area and select "Show disabled devices," then make sure Stereo Mix is enabled.
    2. Make Stereo Mix the default device: In the same "Recording" tab, right-click on Stereo Mix and select "Set as Default Device."
    3. Update audio drivers: Go to the website of your audio device's manufacturer and download the latest audio drivers for your system.
    4. Disable other audio devices: If you have other audio devices connected to your system, try disabling them temporarily and check if Stereo Mix works.
    5. Restart audio services: Press the Windows key + R, type "services.msc," and hit Enter. Right-click on "Windows Audio" and select "Restart," then repeat for "Windows Audio Endpoint Builder."

Thanks for your reply Cristiano, but I was posting this as an answer, not a question. All the other posts that asked this same question did not allow replies, so I thought I'd post my own solution to this issue so that hopefully it helps others.

Thanks a million jpvanoosten! I have been looking for a solution for this and have almost gave up on it. Who would thought it would need the default motherboard speaker jack to be connected to a dummy line when we are not even trying to link it to the playback device. Windows 11 really need to patch this. I don't think we are the only few who use outputs like USB/digital out for more accurate audio output.
