How do I change line spacing within a cell?

I am attempting to fill cells with  text values.  The cells are 174 pt tall, the values are 170 pt Arial, all Caps or numbers.  The three vertical orientations, top, center and bottom, do not work - the value spills over the edge of the cell.  It appears that there is an implicit line spacing included in the positioning of the text, which I would like to set to zero or eliminate, as you can do in MS Word.

(This is for a relative suffering from Macular Degeneration.  I am attempting to print maximum size characters or numbers in a table on the available page.)

    There apparently are many users with similar requests, basically to allow the power and freedom to control line spacing within an individual cell as is available for use in Word text.   The experts have responded that there is no built-in way to do that in Excel, and apparently not even an easy way to do it in VB.  And most of those who responded are frustrated that MS has not responded with such a capability.  I agree.

    One suggestion was to convert the Excel table to MS Word.  Last time I tried a table in Word I found it even more cumbersome, with problems in coordinating table boundaries with page margins, and problems controlling column sizes, but maybe that has improved over the years.

    There is data in the adjoining cells.  But more importantly, my problem is with how Excel positions the data vertically, not horizontally.  I cannot get the data to be centered vertically in the cell.  It either is shown too low or too high, not centered. 

    With further experimentation, that appears to happen mostly when I try to format individual characters within the cell differently (different color, or smaller font size) than the rest of the cell.

    If there is nothing entered in the cell to the right, the text will spill over into the adjacent cell(s) unless you select Wrap Text.
