Audio input devices not working on pc

Hello, I am having issues with my microphone. It used to work fine about two months ago, but since then sound is not being recorded from my microphone (headset). The device is detected by device manager and it shows up under control panel, but under sound settings>input>device properties the sound test shows 0%. I have tested this with a different set of headphones and have the same issue.

These are all of the things I have tried:

Sound settings>input>troubleshoot does not detect an issue

Troubleshoot audio recording does not detect an issue

Installed all Windows updates

Installed updates through AMD Radeon Software

Intel Driver and Support Assistant says there are no available driver or software updates

Uninstalled and reinstalled all of my sound drivers (AMD High Definition Audio Device and High Definition Audio Device) as well as the audio (headset) device

Ensured microphone and speakers were enabled under sounds>recording/playback

Updated drivers in device manager using "browse computer for software" then "show compatible hardware" then "high definition audio"

Microphone privacy settings are set to allow access and allow apps to access microphone

I have not moved my PC at all to possibly cause damage to the microphone jack

Here is my system info:

The driver:

Is it possible that the problem has something to do with there being two audio devices (AMD high def audio device and high def audio device)? I have run out of ideas. I appreciate any help.

Hi Max. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator, here to help you.

I will give you all possible Microphone fixes to try in sequence. Even if you've already tried one I'd do it in this order as one step may affect the next.

Please run the Recording Sound troubleshooter at Start button > Settings>Update & Security>Troubleshoot.

    Try these fixes next:

    https://blog.pcrisk.com/windows/12487-microphon... (avoid ad links)

    https://www.windowscentral.com/setting-your-hea...

    https://www.howtogeek.com/395296/fix-my-microph...

    http://maxedtech.com/fix-microphone-not-working...

    https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/fix-microphone-pr...

    https://windowsreport.com/internal-microphone-s...

Some report that what worked is turning off Fast Startup at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power buttons do > Change Settings Currently Unavailable > uncheck the box for Fast Startup, Save Settings. Restart and then disable Hibernate file to clear it, restart PC again and enable Hibernate again: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/enable-hiberna...

Right click the volume icon in System Tray at right end of task bar, open Sound Settings, then Choose Your Input Devices, see if the microphone is listed, set it as Default device.

Type Microphone in Start Search, open Set up Microphone, scroll down to Microphone and choose Get started to set it up.

Also reset the prompt to ask for which device was plugged in here:

Try updating and reinstalling the Microphone driver in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu, then Device Manager, then Audio Input and Output devices, then Microphone . Choose Microphone then Driver tab, then Update > Automatically. If no newer try Driver tab > Update > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previously installed drivers. If that fails try Driver tab > Uninstall, restart PC to reinstall driver.

Update the Sound drivers from the PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page. While there make sure you also have the latest Chipset, Display, Network, USB and all other drivers, comparing with the version presently installed in Device Manager.

If no newer driver then uninstall the ones presently installed in Device Manager, reached by right clicking the Start Button. Restart PC to reinstall.

When did this behavior begin? If you have an idea you might be able to System Restore back to a point before it began: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t...

It's possible this was caused by a Windows Update so if nothing above works, go to Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update, check the Installed Updates list for Updates that might have been just installed, try uninstalling them using the Uninstall button present there. Then hide the Updates using the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

If this was caused by a Version update (which you can confirm at Settings > System > About) then for ten days you can roll back Version in Settings>Update & Security>Recovery and hide it until it matures using the Hide Updates Tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

If there are other performance problems then go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

Others are fixing USB mic and headset issues with Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account, because the account is corrupted and this is the only fix.

If nothing else helps then run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This solves many problems and will also bring it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post resolved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Thank you for the response!

Ok so I got through the first and second links you provided (unfortunately I don't have any restore points other than one from last night). After running the services program and restarting Windows Audio, my PC has suddenly restarted without warning four times throughout the past hour. Also, I noticed this warning:

I researched the warning and have started going through the steps from this link: https://www.minitool.com/news/device-not-migrated.html

Then realized that I used to have a Realtek audio driver, and now I have an AMD one which replaced the Realtek driver (nothing shows after selecting view>hidden devices). So I downloaded the Realtek audio driver from the motherboard's manufacturer site and now I have these two drivers:

    And these inputs:

The line in and mic both still show the unmigrated warning. I also tried restarting Windows Audio again, but the restarting problem persists. I thought this information might be useful to help narrow down the problem. I will continue to go through the links you've provided. Thanks!

Max, have you tried the drivers from the PC or motherboard manufacturer's Support Downloads web page first? The specs your posted make this unclear. These should be the first sound drivesr you try if the sound is integrated onto the motherboard or it is a factory PC. While there check that you also have the latest chipset, BIOS, display, network, bluetooth, USB and all other drivers, compared to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button.

Hi, for some reason logging in on a different computer made me make a new ID with the same phone number but it's still me.

The first drivers I downloaded were from the motherboard manufacturer's website from this link: https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450M-HDV%20R4.0/#Download

I downloaded the realtek audio driver. Do I need the AMD all in one download as well?

My issue has now turned into an infinite restart loop. I was able to boot in safe mode and restore my pc back to before I changed anything involving the sound issue. But after letting it sit for 10 minutes on the desktop, it restarted, then blue screened, and now I cannot get to my desktop or boot in safe mode- both result in a blue screen. I can't use any of the troubleshoot menu options- it always says that there is a problem and no changes were made to my pc. I can get into command prompt, but sometimes it restarts while I'm using that. So I can't reset my pc, I can't uninstall latest windows updates, the automatic diagnostics doesn't find anything, I have tried pressing the power button to restart my pc as soon as the windows logo shows up to bring up the boot manager menu and that doesn't work- it just enters repair mode over and over. Sometimes after restarting it doesn't enter repair mode and blue screens instead. I don't have a physical copy of windows, so I believe I need to access my hard drive, but I don't know how to do that with my limited options.

I have no idea what the cause of all this is, especially since I used system restore. I don't know if the automatic restore point was created before or after I had manually installed several windows updates, but I assume it would have been made before I made any changes to my drivers. I don't remember if I installed the windows updates before or after updating drivers though.

Hello, I have resolved my crashing issue and have a newly reformatted pc. However, I still have the audio input issue so I am wondering where I should start to try fixing the issue.

    Thank you!
