Duplicate photos OneDrive Xbox Series X

Hi, I have started uploading my photos on my Xbox to OneDrive automatically as per the new rules from Microsoft coming into force regarding screenshots being deleted from the Xbox network after 90 days.

I note that on OneDrive sometimes there would be the screenshot and a blank thumbnail of a photo next to it, but not all the time. I deleted the blanks and continued as is.

Today I decided to troubleshoot and unlink and relink my OneDrive.

Now the photo duplicates still occur, but I can see the other image and it seems to be lighter.

I have worked out I only get duplicates on games which are 4K HDR. If the game is not HDR, I do not get a duplicate photo.

Does anyone know what’s going on? I think this used to happen on my PC when I had HDR enabled in the past too.

Some advice would be appreciated. Shall I just continue deleting the duplicate made on HDR enabled games?

Hi OnlyAlex,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconveniences,

This is a known issue that affects some users who upload screenshots and game clips from their Xbox consoles to OneDrive. It seems that the Xbox creates two versions of the same image: one with HDR and one without HDR. The HDR version is lighter and has more details, while the non-HDR version is darker and has less details. OneDrive then uploads both versions to your cloud storage, resulting in duplicate photos.

There are a few possible solutions you can try to fix the problem:

  • Turn off HDR on your Xbox console. You can do this by going to Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes and unchecking the box for Allow HDR10. This will prevent your Xbox from creating HDR versions of your screenshots and game clips.
  • Turn off automatic upload to OneDrive on your Xbox console. You can do this by going to Settings > Preferences > Capture & share and selecting Don't upload under Automatically upload captures by me. This will allow you to manually select which screenshots and game clips you want to upload to OneDrive and avoid duplicates.
  • Delete the duplicate photos in OneDrive. You can do this by going to the OneDrive website and signing in to your account. Click on the Files tab and select the Photos folder. Look for the duplicate photos and delete the ones you don't want. You can also use the Find and remove duplicate files option in the Manage Storage settings to automatically detect and delete duplicate files.

Let me know if this helps or if you need further clarifications.

Regards, Sola
