Microsoft wireless mouse keeps turning itself off

My microsoft 1000 wireless mouse has suddenly begun turning itself off (ie, the LED goes out) without command and regardless of the position of the on/off switch on the bottom. Using that switch to turn it back on will work (often several tries are needed), but it will switch off again, sometimes after only a few seconds. It worked perfectly for several months before this bug appeared.

I am running Windows 7 (fully up to date with Microsoft updates). I use NOD32 antivirus and Spybot.

To try and fix this bug I have so far:

  1. Replaced the hardware. No effect on problem.
  2. Un- and re-installed all relevant drivers from Microsoft. No effect.
  3. Run the built-in Windows troubleshooter. No effect.

I am at my wit's end and have had to revert to a wired mouse.

If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.

    Hi OZgazza,

I appreciate the steps that you have tried to resolve the issue.

Does this issue occur when you launch a specific program or randomly?

**Method 1:**I would suggest you to perform the steps provided here and check the results.

    a. Click on S tart.

    b. On the search bar, type “Device Manager”.

    c. Right click on your 'Mice and other pointing device'

    d. Select Properties.

    e. Click on Power Management.

    f.  Uncheck “Allow the device to turn off to save power setting” option.

    g. Check the issue.

**Method 2:**Place the computer in clean boot state and check the results.

Note: Once you are done with clean boot, please follow the section ‘How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot’ under ‘more information’ in the article to put your computer back to normal startup.

**Method 3:**If the issue still persists, you may refer the steps mentioned in the article.

    Dear Winston

Thanks for the prompt reply. First, I should also mention what I forgot to include in my question,  that I changed USB ports to try and fix the bug, without success.

Regarding your top solution, unfortunately that option is greyed out and not accessible. I am unsure why (but see below).

FYI, my version of Windows 7 Home Premium is 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601.

    Other OS Description  Not Available

    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

    SMBIOS Version 2.7

    Windows Directory C:\Windows

    System Directory C:\Windows\system32

Your top fix seems promising, so if there is a way to access the currently greyed-out option, I wd love to know it before attempting the more complex and time-consuming solutions on offer. Bear in mind that I am now on a corded mouse. If I go back to the cordless to run complex diagnostics, I will be reduced to using the touchpad, which I truly loathe and which will slow me down enormousely (pardon pun).

While you think about the above I will be tweaking my power options to see if I can access the greyed-out option that way. I'll check back tomorrow (ie, Wednesday, my time = GMT+10 hours).

    Winston,

    Further info:

    1. The problem seems to occur randomly but is getting worse. Now it usually occurs within 30 sec of turning the mouse on. It began occurring after I downloaded a big swag of MS updates a few days back, tho I don't know if there's a causal connection.
    2. I did of course run the cordless before accessing the Device Manager to test yr fix, tho it was hard to stop the thing switching off before I completed the process. The device in its current state is now essentially useless, which is why I am a corded.

"1. Replaced the hardware. No effect on problem."

What did you mean by this?  Did you replace the mouse?

Yes... both the mouse & its USB receiver. I thought on the first occurrence that something that turns off a mouse which has a manual on/off switch had to be a hardware failure in the mouse itself. Alas, not so.

I'm debating whether to try another manufacturer's wireless mouse or just stay with the corded and write the wireless technology off as unreliable.
