I would like to copy a list from one Sharepoint site to another but none of the videos or pages I've seen look like the Sharepoint I am using. We just started using Sharepoint so I think I am using Sharepoint online.

Hi Mike,

When you add a list to a SharePoint site, you're using a list template. Saving list templates let you reuse customized lists. A template saves fields, formulas, and formatting, and optionally, data as well. Templates can be downloaded for archiving or uploaded to another site collection.

If you are using the site connected to group i.e. Office 365 group site, then these sites do not currently support list templates.

For other SharePoint Online sites and if you are the Global admin, first enable scripting to use list templates. For more info about how to enable scripting, see Turn scripting capabilities on or off.

Once you’ve enabled the custom script, please follow the steps in this article under the section Online,2016,2013 to know how to Create a list template, Download a template and Upload a template to the list template gallery in SharePoint Online.

After following the last step from the article i.e**. Upload a template to the list template gallery in SharePoint Online,**go to the site, **** click Settings>Site Content> New>App.

In the search box, type the name of the list template which you saved and from the search result click on the list template. It’ll ask you to provide a new name. After giving the name, you can use this list.

Please note, if you are using the Office 365 group site, then this feature is currently not available.

Reference:Manage list templates

Let me know if you have any doubt.

Thanks,

Neha

Your confusion is understandable - Msft has taken a product that was not very good to start with and is trying to disguise its inadequacies with constant, untested updates that do not address what customers have been asking for for 10 years. They expect you to somehow know what "group" and team sites are and the difference between the "classic" and "modern" experiences.  The documentation and support are terrible but if you want to stick with Sharepoint, Msft has placed the onus firmly on users to figure out how to use it.

List templates are a good example - this is obviously a much used and useful feature, but Msft has unilaterally decided it's not needed in group sites. Their current approach is to remove the ability to customize SP as much as possible. That would be okay if they were offering an improved out of the box experience. But so far, they haven't.

"Since, the question you have now is different from the original topic"

Actually it isn't - and the "new" question is already answered. As you've pointed out,  Mike created a modern group site, so he won't be able to save templates and will have to start from scratch.  So once again, the "modern" experience is a step backwards for users and reduces functionality with no compensatory price reduction.

If designed properly, explanations like the above wouldn't be necessary. All these pointless, random changes are scaring users off and destroying whatever level of acceptance of SP we'd accomplished. One step forward about 8 steps back. Get a grip Msft

    • stabilize the existing product, fix its many bugs, get people to actually "like" it and then maybe you can gradually introduce changes  as long as they are intuitive, easy to understand and compatible with existing features. What you're doing now is demonstrating your lack of consumer product marketing acumen and killing user adoption.

What does the statement below mean?

"If you are using the site connected to group i.e. Office 365 group site, then these sites do not currently support list templates."

I am a part of an Office 365 team site. Then I created my own site there.

Does that mean list templates are not available?

Looking at the screen shots you posted, I can never figure out how to get to those places.
